Beavers Win Fifth Straight, Sweep Seattle

September 18, 2018 | Women's Volleyball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team completed its non-conference portion of the schedule Tuesday night with a three-set sweep of Seattle in front of a crowd of 1,338.

"We had a great student turnout tonight that really made for a nice atmosphere for our first home match," head coach Mark Barnard said.

The Beavers improved their record to 10-2, the same mark they achieved at the completion of the preseason as in 2017 when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19.

"Our key takeaways tonight were that we passed very well tonight and were able to run our offense as we wanted. It was also good to be able to get a lot of players court time. It was good to see everyone was ready."

Oregon State got out to a fast start in the first set taking an early 9-3 lead. OSU continued to pour pressure on going up 19-11 following a block by Haylie Bennett and Maddy Gravley. Oregon State went on to secure the set 25-16. Gravley and Maddie Goings posted four kills apiece and Amy Underdown registered nine digs in the set.

The Redhawks recovered for the second set keeping things close early on at 7-7. From that point, the Beavers went on a 13-4 run, with four kills by Underdown, to take control of the game. OSU finished off the set 25-16.

In the third set with OSU scuffling, Grace Massey recorded three straight service aces to put the Beavers up 5-3. Seattle re-grouped to take the lead at 8-7, but once again, Oregon State went on a 6-0 to move up 17-11. The Beavers held on to seal the win with a third set win, 25-19.

Maddie Goings led the Beavers with nine kills while Gravley and Underdown added eight apiece. Defensively at the net, Lindsey Schell registered seven blocks while Underdown tied her season-high with 17 digs.

Game Notes: Amy Underdown recorded a season-high tying 17 digs … Grace Massey tallied aces on back-to-back-to-back serves in the third set … Lindsey Schell registered a career-best four solo blocks … Makenna Browne notched two aces for the first time in her career.

Next Up: Oregon State is back on the court Thursday to take on Oregon in Eugene for the first Civil War of the 2018-19 academic year. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will air on Pac-12 Network.
