FORT WORTH, Texas – The second day of the Big Five Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, saw the Sun Devils make their singles debuts as well as a couple of doubles duos improve to 2-0 in the fall slate.
The weather delays in North Texas didn't seem to bother ASU in doubles play as, once again, two ranked Sun Devil pairings came away with wins, this time over women from Georgia.
No. 8 John-Baptiste/Hattingh rolled to a 6-4 victory over Kowalski/Gonzalez of UGA, and Slaysman/Jankowski won again over the Bulldogs' Carle/Clayton, 7-6(4).
Tereza Kolarova got a new teammate today in freshman
Samantha Alicea, and while the two couldn't hold off Goulak/Wolff, they found success individually earlier in the day.
Alicea was the lone Sun Devil who did not take on a Bulldog in singles play as she drew Lizzie Baker of Virginia and beat the Cavalier sophomore in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-4. As for Kolarova, she swept sophomore Annette Goulak, 6-1, 6-4.
"For our first singles matches of the season, I thought overall we played and competed well," coach
Sheila McInerney said. "Tereza and Cali in particular played at a high level against quality opponents."
Jankowski got her first singles win when she pulled off the comeback victory over Vivian Wolff. The Sun Devil frosh dropped the first set 3-6, but came back to blank Wolff in the second and outlast her in the third to take the match, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
"Georgia has a very good and deep team, so it was a challenge to play them in our first singles matches," McInerney said. "There were definitely some positive and some things to work on as we move forward in this tournament."
ASU continues tournament play tomorrow morning against opponents from Notre Dame.
