SANTA CLARA – Senior
Shinya Kadono scored his Pac-12 leading eighth goal of the season but the Cal men's soccer team fell to Santa Clara 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night.
Kadono has now scored in three consecutive matches and also leads the conference with 18 points.
The Broncos won the game on an own goal in the 93
rd minute, after goalkeeper
Drake Callender made a save on a Santa Clara shot that ricocheted off Cal defender
Ian Lonergan and into the goal.
The Bears struck first on a goal by redshirt freshman
Alonzo Del Mundo, heading in a goal off a feed by sophomore
Francisco Perez. It marked the second time in three matches Perez has assisted on a goal by Del Mundo, and it was Del Mundo's third score of the season.
After the Broncos tied the score in the 34
th minute to make it 1-1 at the half, Kadono caught up to long ball by senior
Halil Beqaj and struck one past Santa Clara goalkeeper Henning Jolivet in the 62
nd minute. But the Broncos tied the score with just under nine minutes to play in regulation.
The loss snapped a four-match unbeaten streak for the Bears (4-2-2). Both of their losses this season have come in overtime.
The Bears played their second straight match without All-Pac-12 midfielder
Sam Ebstein, and starting midfielder
Simon Lekressner also went down in the first half with an injury.
Saturday's match closed out the nonconference portion of Cal's schedule. The Bears will open Pac-12 play Thursday against No. 23 UCLA at Edwards Stadium at 3 p.m. The match will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
