EVANSTON, Ill. --Â
Janaye Sakkas scored her first goal of the season, but No. 13 Iowa overpowered Cal field hockey with goals from four different players to top the Golden Bears, 4-1, in a neutral-site contest at Northwestern's Lakeside Field on Saturday.
Sakkas' goal was Cal's lone goal of the day as the Hawkeyes led the Bears in shots, 9-6, and saves, 4-1.
Katie Birch (12') and Maddy Murphy (27') each scored goals for the Hawkeyes in the first half, with Murphy's goal coming from a wide-open cage as
Danielle Mentink attempted to intercept the ball.
In the 28th minute, Iowa was issued a green card. With the Hawkeyes playing man-down, Cal capitalized on offense and drew a corner. The resulting setplay saw
Lindsay Mathison insert toward
Melina Moore, who sent the ball toward the cage. Though Iowa goalie Leslie Speight saved it, Sakkas grabbed the rebound and poked it past her to cut the Hawkeye lead in half.
Iowa led 2-1 at halftime after owning a 6-2 lead in shots over the Bears.Â
The Hawkeyes extended their lead, 3-1, in the 53rd minute when Lokke Stribos dribbled the ball in and shot it toward the corner.
Megan Rodgers looked to cut Cal's deficit with a pair of scoring opportunities, missing a wide-open cage by just a few inches as her shot hit the post in the 58th minute, and then Iowa saved Rodgers' shot on a penalty corner in the 64th.
Cal pulled relief goalkeeper
Natalie Dalton in the 66th in favor of an extra field player, which the Hawkeyes capitalized on immediately with a goal from Makenna Grewe to make it 4-1.
Dalton played 7:07 in relief for starting keeper
Danielle Mentink, who played the first 58:31 and tallied one save.
The Bears fall to 3-4 on the season.
