Beavers Fall in Five to No. 13 Washington

September 23, 2018 | Women's Volleyball

CORVALLIS, Ore. The Oregon State volleyball team took No. 13 Washington to five sets but fell short Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Beavers fall to 10-4 and 0-2 in Pac-12 play, while Washington improves to 10-2, 2-0. Set scores were 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 19-25 and 10-15.

Oregon State got on top early battling through a close opening stanza to take the first set, then came back taking charge of the second set from the outset to take a two sets to none lead. However, the Huskies rebounded to steal the match.

"We passed the ball well early on," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We just had a few breakdowns and a few spots here and there that added up in the end. We need to work on our sideout offense and we need to better at getting the ball on the floor."

The teams fought in a nip and tuck game throughout a first set that included 15 ties. Maddy Gravley recorded a kill to break a tie at 17-17 and the Beavers took advantage of a pair of Maddie Goings kills and two Washington errors to go up 22-17. Goings' seventh kill of the set and a block by Gravley and Maddie Sheehan gave Oregon State the set, 25-20.

In the second set, OSU went ahead 9-4 and refused to let the Huskies close the gap. A balanced attack on offense including five more kills by Goings gave the Beavers a 25-21 Set 2 win to take a two sets to zero lead.

The Beavers couldn't maintain the momentum in the third set. OSU led 11-9 behind three kills from Amy Underdown, but the Huskies tied it at 11-11 and eased past the Beavers to take the lead at 18-15.  Washington continued to put on pressure and took the third set, 25-18.

Oregon State was serving tough early in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead with aces from Goings and Grace Massey forcing Washington to call for timeout. The break settled the Huskies, who answered with six straight points. UW began to move out opening its lead to 17-13 before Goings and Gravley halt the run with a pair of kills. Back-to-back aces for UW gave the Huskies a 22-14 lead and they continued on to even the match by taking Set 4, 25-19.

The Beavers struggled early in the fifth set as the Huskies posted a huge block on the left side and quickly took a 7-0 lead. OSU rallied late in the set as Goings and Lindsey Schell each knocked down a pair of kills but it was too late and the Huskies took the set 15-10.

Goings led the Beavers' offense with 20 kills while Kayla Ellis and Maddie Sheehan registered a team-leading 14 digs apiece.

Game Notes: Freshman outside hitter Kyla Waiters shed her redshirt when she checked into the match midway through the fifth set for the first time in her college career … Maddie Goings tallied a team-high 20 kills, the second time she has accounted for 20 or more kills in 2018 … Kayla Ellis and Maddie Sheehan each posted 14 digs to lead five Beavers in double figures … Three Beavers registered double-doubles – Goings (20 kills, 12 digs), Amy Underdown (11 kills, 10 digs) and Maddie Sheehan (38 assists, 14 digs).

Next Up: After playing 12 of the first 13 matches of the season on the road, Oregon State remains home next week to host Arizona State on Friday and Arizona on Sunday.
