The Pac-12 will host the Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championships at the Maverik Center on March 23, 2019 after signing a multi-year partnership. It marks the first-ever neutral site for the sport’s premiere event.
“We are excited to bring this event to the Maverik Center,” said Danette Leighton, Pac-12 Chief Marketing Officer. “The tradition of excellence across in the Pac-12 and the strong following among Utah’s community for women’s gymnastics sets up this championship to be an electric one.”
The Pac-12 is coming off a season where four teams advanced to the semifinal of the NCAA Championships, with UCLA and UTAH earning a spot in the NCAA Super Six. The Bruins captured the NCAA crown using a pair of perfect 10s to come from behind and clinch its seventh all-time title, unseating two-time champion Oklahoma by 0.0375. With a long tradition of excellence as well, and nine NCAA titles to its credit, the Utes advanced to the NCAA Super Six for the 21st time in the 26 years of the format.
Either UCLA or Utah have won the Pac-12 crown in the last five season, the Bruins winning its second in that span in 2018. OREGON STATE won a couple since 2008 and STANFORD captured the title once during that span.
The Maverik Center can seat over 9,000 for women’s gymnastics, has hosted numerous marquee events over its 20-year history, including the 2002 Winter Olympics when it was the venue for the Ice Hockey Championships. The current home for the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies, an affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the Maverik Center is dedicated to providing superior entertainment in a comfortable, enjoyable setting. Located in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley in West Valley City, Utah, the site will transform the third weekend in March for each of the next three seasons as the one-day event takes over the Salt Lake community for the Pac-12 championships.
