SEATTLE --- Washington battled back with a late goal on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to force overtime, but was unable to walk away with points from the match after No. 10 Stanford scored with just over three minutes left in the second overtime period to escape with a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The Huskies drop to 7-6-0 and to 2-3-0 in Pac-12 play while the Cardinal improve to 7-2-3 and move back into a tie with UCLA for the top spot in the conference at 4-1-0.
Washington's offense produced a pair of goals against one of the best defenses in the county as Stanford allowed two goals for just the second time over the last 27 matches dating back to last year. However, the Huskies couldn't find a third goal and suffered the tough loss on their home field.
"That's why they are national champions: they make the most of a bad day," said Washington Head Coach
Jamie Clark. "I don't think they deserved to win today, but they find a way to win and credit them for that."
Washington got on the board first as
Dylan Teves netted his third goal of the season in the 22nd minute.
Kasey French got the play started with a great pass from 35 yards out, finding the freshman in the middle of the box behind the Cardinal defense. Teves gathered the ball, turned and quickly fired a shot past the keeper to make it 1-0.
The score would stay that way through the rest of the half until Stanford tied the match in the 52nd minute. The Cardinal took advantage of a set piece, sending a free kick from 30 yards out on the left side, The ball went to the far post where it was headed back out in front of the goal mouth, then headed in to level the match at 1-1.
The Cardinal took the lead in the 78th minute as a Stanford player was fouled just inside the box with the Cardinal converting the spot kick to go back up 2-1.
Washington kept the pressure up and after having multiple chances, finally was able to tie the game on penalty kick of their own.
Blake Bodily set up the play on the left side, sending in a high cross toward
Quentin Pearson, the senior beat his defender and looked to have what would be an open header at goal, but was pushed from behind before the ball arrived.
Corban Anderson stepped up and took the kick from the spot, scoring his second goal of the season and evening the match at 2-2.Â
The Huskies had a great chance in the first overtime period as Teves worked around a pair of defenders and got the ball to Bodily. The sophomore sent a low cross through the box where two Huskies had a chance at it. However, it missed both players feet and rolled through the box before being cleared by the Cardinal.
Stanford would get the game winner late in the second overtime with a finish in the box off yet another set piece.
The match was the fourth overtime contest between the two teams in the last seven series meetings and the third in the last four contests. It was also the seventh-straight match between the two rivals which has been decided by one goal.
Washington faces Cal and Stanford again next week in the Bay area, taking on the Golden Bears in Berkeley on Thursday, then facing the Cardinal again on Sunday in Palo Alto. Both matches are slated for 3:00 p.m. and are on the Pac-12 Network.
