Maria Smith, who knocked off Chloe Goyette and Jordan Harris of Saint Mary's, 8-1.
Â
"It was a really good first day for us at the tournament," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "Everybody on every court competed hard. In a couple situations we had to fight through some matches, but we did a really good job of that. We also showed mental toughness and stayed focused in matches we were in control of today, when we easily could've lost our way. But we stayed on task. That'll bode well as we go into upcoming days of the tournament."
Â
The regional is a qualifying tournament for November's Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, as the regional's singles and doubles champions and singles runner-up claim berths to nationals in Arizona.
