CORVALLIS, Ore. – California volleyball kept the Golden Bears undefeated in Corvallis this weekend posting another lopsided victory against the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
Â
A day after Cal's football team found success across the street at Reser Stadium (49-7), the Bears volleyball squad picked up its first win over the Beavers since 2013 with a sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-20).
Cal (11-10, 3-7 Pac-12) was led by
Mima Mirkovic (.409) with 11 kills, while
Bailee Huizenga (.304) contributed 10 kills and
Preslie Anderson (.533) Â added another nine. Despite OSU (10-12, 0-10 Pac-12) edging Cal 42-42 in total kills, the Bears played much more efficiently, combining for a .591 attacking clip in the final set.
Â
While Cal remained consistent through the entire match, OSU was unable to recover from 24 errors, while the Bears finished with just eight.
Â
Defense also gave Bears the advantage as they collected 8.0 total blocks, led by
Lauren Forte who finished with a game-high 6.0 blocks. Forte also added seven kills to finish with a .667 hitting percentage.
Â
In the final set, Cal jumped to a 7-3 advantage quickly and never gave up the lead in its most efficient hitting game of the season as it finished with a .384 hitting percentage.
Â
Set 2 proved a back-and-forth battle that included eight tie scores, but after a 4-0 run the Bears took an 11-9 lead and held the edge until late in the set when OSU tied things for the last time at 21-21. Cal's largest margin was a four-point advantage at 19-15 as the team managed a 4-2 run to close the set with Mirkovic, Huizenga and Forte contributing kills and Anderson adding a timely ace.
Â
Mirkovic's match-opening ace set a confident tone for the Bears as they held a sizeable lead for the entire first set. Cal hustled to a decisive 15-5 advantage marked by a 5-0 run and a pair of 3-0 runs to keep OSU on its heels. The Bears notched the nine-point set win on back-to-back blocks from Forte with help from Huizenga and Potter. The Bears outhit the Beavers 12-11, but only committed two errors compared to the Beavers' 11.
Â
"Top to bottom, the Pac-12 is a tough conference with great players and well-prepared coaches," said head coach
Jennifer Dorr. "To come in and get a 3-0 road win is huge for our young team. I felt we executed well and played focused. We were ready to take care of business and that showed throughout the match."
Â
The Bears continue their Pac-12 tour on Friday and Sunday in Los Angeles when they face UCLA and USC, respectively. Both matches will be available on Pac12.com via the host team's live stream.
