Trojans Trip Up In Utah USC starts strong, but can't hold on against the Utes

The Trojans got out in front early, but ultimately fell, 41-28, on the road at Utah.

USC WR Michael Pittman Jr. made a circus catch over two defenders to open up the scoring at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Later in the first quarter, DL Jay Tufele scooped up a Utah fumble and returned it 48 yards for a score in front of his hometown crowd in Salt Lake City.

But Utah's offense came alive after that, scoring 34 unanswered points to build up a lead USC couldn't overcome.

In the end, Utah racked up 541 yards of offense, the most USC has allowed this season.

To make matters worse, USC's offense posted just 205 yards, its fewest this year.

USC QB JT Daniels threw for 89 yards and a TD before being placed in concussion protocol in the fourth quarter. In his absence, backup QB Matt Fink threw for 43 yards and a TD.

Utah's rush defense entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation, and held USC to 73 yards on the ground.

With the loss, USC is now tied with Utah and Colorado atop the Pac-12 South.

The Trojans return home this week for another Pac-12 South battle against Arizona State at 12:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 27.
