Volleyball Falls to California in Three

October 21, 2018 | Women's Volleyball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Amy Underdown tallied 14 kills but it wasn't enough as the Oregon State volleyball team fell to California in three sets Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Beavers' record drops to 10-12, 0-10 in the Pac-12, while California improves to 11-10, 3-7. Set scores were 25-16, 25-23 and 25-20.

Underdown led the Beavers' offense in kills for the second straight match and Maddie Goings added 13 but OSU couldn't sustain its play throughout the match. Grace Massey and Kayla Ellis each tallied seven digs and Maddy Gravley led the effort at the net with a team-leading three blocks.

The Beavers fell behind early 8-1 and trailed by 10 at 17-7 before picking up their play to score four out of five closing the gap to 18-11. The Bears continued their strong play to secure the opening set, 25-16.

In the second set, Underdown heated up registering eight kills in the set. A block by Lindsey Schell and Haylie Bennett and an Underdown kill gave the Beavers the lead at 9-7. However, the Bears answered with four straight points. The teams stayed close the rest of the way. A kill by Maddy Gravley followed by an ace by Grace Massey brought the Beavers within a point at 20-19 forcing a Cal timeout. The Bears pulled ahead again by two, but a block by Gravley and Maddie Sheehan again closed it to 24-23 and another timeout for Cal. The Bears would take the set on the next point, 25-23, to go up two sets to none.

OSU again got behind early with Cal taking the lead at 7-3. The Bears continued to push opening the gap to 15-9 before the Beavers began to close. Back-to-back kills by Goings, who racked up eight in the set, and an ace by Montanna Gubrud brought the Beavers back to 15-12. Cal managed to hold on to win the set, 25-20, and the match.

Game Notes: Amy Underdown led OSU in kills, for the second straight match, with 14 kills … Montanna Gubrud recorded two service aces for the first time in her OSU career.
