Pac-12 gymnastics starts strong with nine wins

 

SAN FRANCISCO - #3 UTAH rose in the WCGA rankings after posting its third-best opening week score of 197.175 against Penn State.

  • #2 UCLA defeated #11 Nebraska, scoring a 197.250.
  • #9 CALIFORNIA gave #4 LSU a scare after a mid-meet tie in Baton Rouge.  However, the Golden Bears eventually fell to the Tigers 196.775-195.650 at the Maravich Center.
  • #18 ARIZONA finished second at the Central Michigan quad meet with Maddi Leydin earning a first-place finish, scoring a career-high of 9.875 on the vault.
  • Kyla Brant of #12 STANFORD posted an all-around score of 39.475 helping the Cardinal claim first place at the NorCal Classic.

PAC-12 TEAM NOTES

ARIZONA - Arizona finished second at its first competition, a quad meet hosted by Central Michigan, boosting their WCGA ranking to No. 18 ... Arizona welcomes six newcomers to its roster including Tucson native, MacKinzie Kane who debuted with a 9.825 on the bars and 9.650 on the vault.

ARIZONA STATE - No. 13 Arizona State toppled No. 22 Minnesota and UIC but fell to No. 11 Missouri in its home opener at Wells Fargo Arena ... Sophomore Cairo Leonard-Baker scored a 9.900 on the floor and the bars making her the highest scoring Sun Devil in both events.

CALIFORNIA - No. 9 Cal took an early lead versus No. 4 LSU on the bars, but the Golden Bears ultimately fell to the Tigers 196.775-195.650 in Baton Rouge ... Freshman Milan Clausi finished third on the vault in her California debut and fifth-year senior Toni-Ann Williams provided a strong veteran presence placing third on the floor.  Cal will face UCLA, Michigan State, and UC Davis at the Anaheim Convention Center on Sat., Jan. 12.

OREGON STATE - The Beavers will return 22 out of 24 routines from their 2018 lineup along with the addition of four freshmen -- Leah BivrellMadi DagenAlex McClung and Kristina Peterson -- helping Oregon State begin this season ranked No. 17 in the nation in the WCGA Preseason Poll ... Oregon State will open the season on Sun., Jan. 13 at the Illinois tri meet that includes No. 11 Kentucky.

STANFORD - No. 12 Stanford claimed first place in the NorCal Classic defeating Sacramento State, San Jose State, and UC Davis ... 2018 Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year and 19-time All-American, Elizabeth Price graduated last year leaving the Cardinal’s 17-member roster with 13 underclassmen including 5 freshmen ... The Cardinal will compete against Sacramento State again on Fri. Jan, 11, this time in a tri meet with Seattle Pacific.

UCLA - No. 2 UCLA defeated No. 8 Nebraska 197.250-195.700 in the Bruins’ first home meet ... The 2018 national champions were selected as the preseason favorite to defend their NCAA title. The Pac-12 coaches agreed, tabbing the Bruins to capture the 2019 Pac-12 title as well ... Head coach Valorie Kondos Field will seek her eighth national title in her 29th and final season with the Bruins.

UTAH - The Utes posted their third-best opening week score, crushing No. 20 Penn State 197.175-194.450 ... former two-time NCAA champion MyKayla Skinner had the best of the Pac-12 opening scores in the All-Around (39.700) by scoring 9.950 on the vault, bars, and floor... Utah gymnastics led all collegiate women’s sports in attendance for the eighth time last year, averaging 15,139 fans per meet.

WASHINGTON - The Huskies finished the 2018 season at No. 9 and look to make their third-straight NCAA appearence in 2019 ... The GymDawgs welcome six newcomers to their roster adding to last year’s standouts, NCAA Regional floor champions Kristyn Hoffa and Maya Washington ... The Huskies won’t open the season until they travel to No. 11 Nebraska on Sat., Jan. 12.
