January 21, 2019 | Gymnastics

In front of 10,270 fans on Monday afternoon, the No. 2 UCLA Gymnastics team defeated No. 19 Arizona State, 197.775-196.125. UCLA's Madison Kocian scored a perfect 10 on the uneven bars, and Kyla Ross won the all-around for the third consecutive meet, scoring 39.450. The Bruins set a new standard by recording 197+ scores in the first three meets of the year for the first time ever.

UCLA (5-0) began the meet by scoring a season-high 49.175 on vault, competing four 10.0-start value vaults. The Bruins were led by sophomore Nia Dennis, who earned a perfect score of 9.95 on her Yurchenko layout full. Freshman Sekai Wright made her season debut after missing the first two meets due to injury, and she bolstered the Bruin lineup with a score of 9.875 on a Yurchenko 1.5. UCLA also received a score of 9.8 from Kendal Poston in her collegiate debut. The Bruins' score was just behind Arizona State's 49.250 on uneven bars, however, as the Sun Devils were led by Cairo Leonard-Baker's 9.975.

UCLA made up a lot of ground in rotation two, scoring a season-best 49.700 on uneven bars, the fourth-highest bars score in school history. Just before Kocian's perfect 10, freshman Norah Flatley came close to perfection, earning a career-high 9.975. Also scoring above 9.9 in the rotation were Kyla Ross (9.95) and freshman Margzetta Frazier, who led off with a 9.925. Anna Glenn added a season-high 9.85.

Leading 98.875-98.100 at the halfway mark, the Bruins extended the lead with five beam scores over 9.800 and a team total of 49.250. Kocian led off with a 9.875, Brielle Nguyen scored 9.825, and Glenn scored 9.850. Flatley and Ross closed the set strong with 9.850s as UCLA increased its lead to 148.125-146.800.

The Bruins made rotation four a big dance party, scoring 49.650. Gracie Kramer's 9.925 leadoff routine set the tone. Dennis followed her with a 9.875, and Ross tied her career-high with a 9.950. After Pauline Tratz's 9.825, Frazier followed with a career-high 9.950, and Katelyn Ohashi closed the meet with a 9.950.

UCLA will next compete at Stanford on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 4 pm in Maples Pavilion.
