IRVINE, Calif. – Â
Jordan Jones and two Washington relievers held No. 25 UC Irvine to just three hits, but the Anteaters made them count in a 2-1 win to earn a double-header split on Saturday with the Huskies.
Â
Washington won game one of the double header, 9-5, at Ciccerone Field at Anteater Ballpark but couldn't get the bats going in the nightcap to support an outstanding outing on the hill by Jones.
Â
UC Irvine jumped ahead with a first inning run off Jones. Cleanup hitter Brandon Lewis lifted a ball into right field that got lost in the night sky and fell harmlessly onto the ground for an RBI double. It ended up being the only hit for the Anteaters over the first six innings.
Â
UW answered right back in their half of the second inning to tie the score at 1-1.
Jonathan Schiffer scored easily from first on a
Ramon Bramasco triple. It was one of two hits for the newcomer Bramasco, who had three hits in the two games.
Â
The second inning run would be all the Huskies could muster in a tight game. Anteater pitchers held them to five hits on the evening with UCI starter Tanner Brubaker keeping the Dawgs in check over 5 2/3 innings.
Â
Jones entered the seventh inning having allowed just the first inning double, but Lewis got to him once again, this time with a decisive, lead-off moon shot over the left-field fence for his second solo home run of the double-header.
Â
Jones (0-1) eventually left the game after giving up a one-out single in the seventh. He finished the night with eight strikeouts and allowing just three hits.
Â
Alonzo Garcia (1-0) threw 2 1/3 shutout innings to earn the win for UCI, while Taylor Rashi set the Huskies down in order in the ninth inning to pick up the save.
