Ducks lose game two to UW

03/16/19 | Baseball

EUGENE, Ore. – The Washington Huskies utilized the big inning Saturday in Eugene, scoring five in the third, four in the eighth, and six in the ninth in taking the second game of a three-game series at PK Park against Oregon, 19-3.

How it Happened: Washington took the lead with a five-run third inning that was capped by a three-run home run to left by third baseman Connor Blair. Previously in the inning, the Huskies had taken the lead after a pair of Oregon miscues that included Noah Hsue scoring on an errant pickoff throw by Ducks starter Robert Ahlstrom. Nick Kahle then extended the UW lead to 2-0 with an RBI single that plated Braiden Ward, who has reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

The Huskies added three more in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Mason Cerillo and a sacrifice fly by Nick Roberts, and UW scored again in the sixth on a wild pitch by reliever Christian Ciuffetelli.

Ahlstrom, who gave up seven runs (six earned) on five hits, took the loss to fall to 3-2 despite striking out five Huskies in the first four innings. Washington starter Jordan Jones earned the win to improve to 2-2, retiring the last 10 Ducks he faced before leaving at the end of the seventh. Jones did not allow a runner past second base after the third inning.

Washington scored four runs in the eighth inning against Ducks reliever Jack Noble, including an RBI double by Kahle and an RBI triple by Cerillo. The Huskies followed that with six runs in the ninth, headlined by a two-run triple by Cerillo, who drove in four runs in the win.

The Ducks (10-7, 0-2 Pac-12) would score two runs in the third inning on a highly unusual play that began with Jonny DeLuca's single to right center field that Huskies center fielder Ward barely missed on a diving stop but threw quickly back to the infield. Both Tanner Smith and Novitske were simultaneously caught in between third and home, and in the course of the rundown, Smith scored and Novitske was safe at third as Huskies second baseman Hsue fell to the ground mid-play, suffering what appeared to be a lower leg injury that caused him to leave the game. Spencer Steer's sacrifice fly would narrow the lead to 5-3.

Box Score Notes: Novitske went 3-for-4 in the win, while left fielder Taylor Adams was 2-for-3 … Five Huskies collected multi-hit games, including Cerillo, who had three hits and four RBI.

On Deck: Oregon and Washington conclude their three-game series at PK Park Sunday 12 p.m.
