Men's Tennis Drops Match Against Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -The 50th ranked University of Utah men's tennis team was unable to pick up a victory today on their road trip to take on Cal Poly, as they dropped the match against the Mustangs with a score of 2-5. With this loss, the Utes now move to a 13-6 overall record on the season.

"We had our chances, with multiple set points, match points and breaks up, but we failed to capitalize. Part of it was our own fault, but great job by the Mustangs today. They refused to give up when things didn't go their way and continued to fight until the end," said head coach Roeland Brateanu.

In doubles, the Utes were unable to earn the point, allowing the Mustangs to take an early lead going into singles. Utah's two wins of the day came from Dan Little and Slava Shainyan in singles. On court No. 1, Little was able to defeat Josh Ortlip with a score of 6-1, 7-5. Shainyan then followed with a win at the No. 3 position, knocking off Gary Vardanyan in a competitive match with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Despite their efforts, the Utes were unable to pull off a comeback, losing 2-5 to Cal Poly.

The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action next weekend, as they will take on the University of Washington and 17th ranked University of Oregon. The match against the Huskies will be held in Seattle, Washington, on Friday, March 16th, at 6 p.m. MT. The match against the Ducks will be held in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday, March 31st, at 12:30 p.m. MT.
