No. 3 UCLA Picks Up Two Wins in Tempe

TEMPE, Ariz. -- No. 3 UCLA (19-3, 3-0) picked up a pair of MPSF wins today at Arizona State when the Bruins beat the eighth-ranked Sun Devils, 12-9, and then came back in the afternoon to beat No. 22 Indiana, 16-2, at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

In the win at ASU, the Bruins were led by senior Lizette Rozeboom who had a hat trick. UCLA led 3-2 at the end of the first period with goals from juniors Maddie Musselman and Brooke Maxson and Rozeboom. The Bruins held a slim 6-5 lead at halftime with another goal by Musselman and Rozeboom and a penalty shot conversion from junior Bronte Halligan.

The Bruins were able to pull away in the third period, winning the quarter 4-2, to take a 10-7 lead into the final stanza. Senior Rachel Whitelegge scored the first two goals of the third while Halligan added her second. Sophomore Roxy Wheaton added the Bruins final goal of the period. Then in a 2-2 fourth quarter, Musselman and Rozeboom both completed their hat tricks.

In the win over the Hoosiers, UCLA was again led by Rozeboom with three goals as 11 different Bruins scored.

The Bruins jumped out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first period after scoring the first two goals on penalty shots by Wheaton and Rozeboom. Redshirt senior Grace Reego and freshman Katrina Drake also scored a goal in the opening period. Rozeboom added her second of the quarter to cap the scoring in the first. The Bruins won the second quarter, 3-1, to build an 8-2 lead at the break. Halligan and sophomore Myna Simmons scored in the second quarter while Rozeboom completed her hat trick.

The second half was all UCLA as the Bruins pitched a shutout in the third and fourth periods while putting up four scores on the board in each quarter. In the third period, the Bruins received goals from seniors Sarah Sheldon, and Kelsey Blacker and one each from freshmen Bella Wentzel and Bella Baia. Blacker added her second in the fourth period as did Simmons. Sophomore Lexi Liebowitz scored the final two goals of the game to provide the 16-2 final.

UCLA returns to action on Friday, March 29 in their final non-conference game of the regular season against Pacific at 6:00 p.m. PT under the lights of Spieker Aquatics Center.
