DeLuca delivers walk-off hit in 10th

03/17/19 | Baseball

EUGENE, Ore. – In a classic game of dominant pitching that remained a scoreless tie until the last hitter, Jonny DeLuca's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th scored Taylor Adams to give Oregon a 1-0, extra-inning win.

The victory improved the Ducks to 11-7 on the year and 1-2 in Pac-12 play, avenging losses in the first two games of the series.

How it Happened: DeLuca's game-winning RBI happened after the Ducks loaded the bases in the 10th. Adams hit a one-out single to start the rally, and after a Kyle Froemke strikeout, Tanner Smith's single to right moved Adams to third. Sam Novitske then walked to load the bases for DeLuca, who singled off Stevie Emanuels to end the game.

Sunday's game featured dominant pitching, as the Ducks managed only six baserunners through eight innings while not having a runner reach third base until Adams in the 10th. Oregon pitchers stranded 11 runners on the day, and Ducks' right-handed pitcher Ryne Nelson was dominant in relief, striking out eight in 5.2 scoreless innings. Nelson struck out the side in the ninth inning and allowed only three hits while walking one and allowing no runners to advance past second base.

Washington threatened in the seventh with runners on first and second with two outs, but Nelson coaxed a fly ball to Ducks' center fielder Jonny DeLuca to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

Left-handed pitcher Nico Tellache entered the game in the 10th and earned the victory by pitching a scoreless inning. With Huskies on first and second with one out, a balk call moved the runners to second and third. Tellache buckled down and struck out clean-up hitter Joe Wainhouse and then ended the inning by inducing a fly out to right by Connor Blair to end the threat.

Huskies starting pitcher Josh Burgmann was dominant, pitching six scoreless innings allowing four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Ducks' catcher Jakob Goldfarb exited the game in the second inning with an apparent leg injury. He was involved in a home-plate collision in which Blair was thrown out at home plate by Ducks right-fielder Smith to end the inning. Goldfarb then led off the second with a single to center field, but he was noticeably limping on his way to first and was subsequently removed for pinch-runner James Bell.

Quotable: Head coach George Horton
On the win...
"We needed that win, really proud of my guys. We got beat around a little bit the past couple days. Things weren't coming easy for us, but what a spectacular performance by the three guys that were out there today"

Sophomore Jonny DeLuca
On his walk-off single...
"It felt great right when it came off the bat. When it's a 3-2 count with the bases loaded the adrenaline is definitely pumping, I love that atmosphere that the crowd was providing, makes it really fun to play in."

Sophomore Ryne Nelson
On the team bouncing back after Friday and Saturday...
"It's always good to come out on Sunday and steal a game away when you didn't play as well as you wanted to on Friday and Saturday. It's huge difference being 1-2 In the Pac-12 than being 0-3.

Box Score Notes: Nelson faced 21 hitters in relief, allowing only four to reach base (3 hits, 1 walk) while striking out eight … The Ducks are now 41-22 all-time vs. Washington in Eugene … The shutout was the second for the Ducks in 2019, as Oregon also shutout Loyola Marymount on March 2 … Spencer Steer went 2-for-4, his 32nd career multi-hit game.

On Deck: Oregon resumes Pac-12 play with a three-game series against Arizona State next Friday at PK Park, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
