Six Pac-12 women’s basketball teams earn NCAA Tournament bids

SAN FRANCISCO - For the third-consecutive year, six Pac-12 teams earned NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament bids, the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Selection Committee announced today with the release of the 64-team field. It also marks the sixth-consecutive year the Pac-12 has been awarded at least five bids. OREGON, OREGON STATE and STANFORD each received a top-16 seed, giving them the right to host in the first and second rounds.

The six selections is just one less than the league record of seven set in 2017. Pac-12 teams have seen plenty of postseason success in recent years, winning the most NCAA Tournament games (41) of any conference over the last three years and posting the best winning percentage (.695) of any Power 5 conference during that span. Pac-12 teams have gone 17-1 in the first round the last three tournaments, placing at least four teams in the Sweet 16 for the third-consecutive year in 2018. At least two teams have advanced to the Elite 8 the last three years (including three in 2018 and 2016), and there has been at least one Pac-12 team in the Final Four in nine of the last 11 years, including a league-record two in 2016.

Ranked No. 6 in the final Associated Press poll, STANFORD (28-4) is the No. 2 seed in the Chicago Regional, hosting No. 15-seed and Big West Champion UC Davis in the first round on Saturday, March 23. The Cardinal is making its 32nd-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 33rd all-time. Stanford heads into the NCAA Tournament after winning its 13th Pac-12 Tournament title, upsetting the top-seeded Ducks in the championship game in Las Vegas. Seventh-seeded BYU and No. 10-seed Auburn also play at Stanford, with the winners of both games advancing to the second round on Monday, March 25.

The regular-season Pac-12 Champion for the second year in a row, seventh-ranked OREGON (29-4) is the No. 2 seed in the Portland Regional, taking on 15th-seeded and Big Sky Champion Portland State (25-7) in the first round in Eugene, Ore. The No. 2 seed ties a program-best, earning a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time last season. The Ducks advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second year in a row in 2018. UO also hosts seventh-seeded Texas (23-9) and 10th-seeded Indiana (20-12) in the first round on Friday, March 22. The winners advance to the second round on Sunday, March 24.

OREGON STATE (24-7) is the No. 4 seed in the Albany Regional, extending its NCAA Tournament appearance streak to six-consecutive years, a program record. The 11th-ranked Beavs host 13th-seeded Boise State (28-4), winners of the Mountain West Conference, on Saturday, March 23. The winner of that matchup faces the winner of the fifth-seeded Gonzaga (28-4) and No. 12-seed Little Rock (21-10), the Sun Belt Champion, first-round game on Monday, March 25. OSU has advanced to the Elite 8 in two of the last three years.

ARIZONA STATE (20-10) is the No. 5 seed in the Portland Regional, heading to Coral Gables, Fla., for its first-round matchup against No. 12-seed Central Florida (26-6) on Friday, March 22. The Sun Devils are making their sixth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and 17th overall, winning their first-round game in each of the last five seasons. The winner faces the winner of the No. 4-seed Miami (Fla.) (24-8) and No. 13-seed FGCU (28-4) game on Sunday, March 24.

Seeded sixth in the Albany Regional, 20th-ranked UCLA (20-12) travels to College Park, Md., to face 11th-seeded Tennessee (19-12). The Bruins are in the tournament for the fourth year in a row and the 16th time all-time while the Lady Vols have been in the tournament all 38 years. If the Bruins win their first-round matchup on Saturday, March 23, they would face the winner of the No. 3-seed and host Maryland (28-4) vs. No. 14-seed Radford (26-6) matchup on Monday, March 25. UCLA has won its first-round matchup in each of the last four seasons.

CALIFORNIA is the No. 8 seed in the Greensboro Regional, traveling to face No. 9-seed North Carolina (18-14) in the first round in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, March 23. The Golden Bears have been in the NCAA Tournament in seven of the last eight years and are making their 14th overall appearance. The winner faces the winner of No. 1-seed and Big 12 Champion Baylor (31-1) and No. 16-seeded Abilene Christian (23-9), Southland Champion and first-time NCAA Tournament participant, on Monday, March 25.

The Pac-12 has had at least two teams in the NCAA Tournament every year of the event, dating back to 1982. This year’s NCAA Women’s Final Four will be held at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla., April 5 and 7. Every round of the NCAA Tournament will be televised on the ESPN Network.
