Pettway Named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week

LOS ANGELES – UCLA sophomore right-hander Zach Pettway has been named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday morning.

A Freshman All-American in 2018, this is the first Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor in Pettway's career. He is the first Bruin pitcher to earn weekly honors from the league since Griffin Canning on Apr. 17, 2017.

Pettway led UCLA to an 8-0 victory over No. 3 Oregon State on Friday night, throwing the first seven innings of a combined four-hit shutout. The Bruins would go on to take two of three from the defending national champions.

The Long Beach, Calif. native allowed just three hits and struck out eight over his seven innings of work. He recorded a pair of 1-2-3 innings, and started off his night with a three-strikeout frame in the top of the first.

The Beavers rarely threatened against Pettway, getting a runner into scoring position with less than outs on just one occasion. Pettway bounced back to end that threat with back-to-back harmless flyouts. OSU went 0-4 overall with runners in scoring position.

Pettway received the win on Friday to even his record at 1-1. He has a 2.67 ERA on the campaign and has allowed one earned run or fewer in three of his five starts. He leads the Pac-12 with 39 strikeouts and is second in the league with 33 2/3 innings.

UCLA, which ascended to No. 1 in the national rankings on Monday, returns to action this weekend by hosting conference rival Arizona for a three-game series starting on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
