Outdoor Campaign Begins in San Diego

03/21/19 | Track and Field

EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon track and field team opens its outdoor campaign with a road trip to San Diego for this weekend's Aztec Invitational at the SDSU Sports Deck. The Ducks are coming off an indoor season that featured two NCAA event titles, 21 All-America honors and a third-place finish for the Women of Oregon.

"That chapter of our season is closed and now we're on to outdoors," head coach Robert Johnson said. "We open up at San Diego this weekend and then we'll stay in that area to train for another 4-5 days before sending a few distance runners to Stanford.

"We talked a little bit about not letting this (NCAA Indoor) moment die and using it as momentum heading into the outdoor season. I think the kids have really taken that message to heart and sharing it with the kids that were here in Eugene and getting ready for outdoors."

Oregon's weekend begins Friday morning with the hammer throw—contested at UC San Diego—and the meet's distance carnival that evening. Among the more than 50 individual entries, the Ducks are slated to have 11 returning outdoor All-Americans competing this weekend.

The lineup is also set to feature the program's perennial-contending 4x100-meter relays, just one of the five events added to the outdoor schedule that are not competed indoor. The Ducks will have additional entries in the 400-meter hurdles, discus and javelin.

"On both the women's and men's sides, we add a lot of events where we think we're fairly decent and add firepower there," Johnson said. "I always feel a little indifferent about half of our team doing this and half of our team doing that. The team aspect is one of the things we push a lot so to have (everyone) on board is a good thing for us. I'm looking forward to that."
