Volleyball Adds Three More for 2019 Season

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah volleyball has added three more players to its signing class, head coach Beth Launiere announced.

The Utes have added Emily Smith, Grace Cannon and Naya Dong. They will enroll this fall for Utah.

Cannon is an opposite from Tustin, California. She was named First Team All-League all four seasons at Foothills High School. As a captain her senior season, she helped lead her team to the CIF State D1 Southern Regional State Finals. Cannon's team was also Century conference champions. In all, she was a Crestview League Champion three times. Cannon was named Crestview League MVP her senior season.

"Grace is a tremendous athlete that has played the game at a high level for a long time," Launiere said. "She is a player that can play multiple positions and her skill level and experience are great for the competitiveness in our gym every day. We look forward to her contributing and competing each day and excited for her to be a part of our program."

Dong is a libero from Kailua, Hawaii. She attended the same high school as setter Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres. Dong was given the 2018 Eddie Hamada Athletic Award. She also made the Interscholastic League of Honolulu – First Team All-Star selection in 2017 and 2018. In her four seasons as 'Iolani School, she won two state championships and was also a two-time state runner up. Dong was also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.

"Naya continues the long line of great prep high-school players we've brought to Utah from the state of Hawaii," Launiere said. "She is a tremendous passer and defensive player that knows the game well. We can't wait to have Naya be a part of our program and bring a high level of volleyball experience to the gym."

Smith is a setter/defensive specialist from Park City, Utah. She lettered four seasons at Park City High School and was named the 2018 UHSAA Region XI Volleyball MVP. Smith was a two-time First Team All-State member as well as being named Utah's outstanding 4A High School Volleyball Performer in assists by MaxPreps. From her sophomore to senior season, she averaged 9.1 assists per set and totaled 1,925 assists. She also had 600 digs, 308 kills and 187 aces.

"Emily has an all-around game that is going to allow her to contribute to the program in so many ways," Launiere said. "We like setters that are great volleyball players and Emily will fit into our system wonderfully. Emily is one of the hardest workers and toughest competitors we've watched in the recruiting process, and we're so excited to get her in our gym and to be a key part of our program and culture."

After these three signees, that brings the total to six that will be joining the Utes on the court this upcoming season.
