AUSTIN, Texas – Cierra Runge (200 free) and
Silja Kansakoski (100 breast) both notched honorable mention All-America honors on day three of the 2019 Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships. The honor is Runge's second of the week as she also achieved First-Team honors yesterday in the 500 free.
Fanny Teijonsalo kick started the Sun Devils in the preliminaries this morning, taking the block in the 100 fly. Teijonsalo finished with a time of 52.55, just eight-hundredths (0.06) of a second off from her personal best of 52.47, but did secure her the fourth-fastest time in Arizona State history.
Runge and
Emma Nordin followed in the 200 free, with Runge touching the wall at 1:43.74 for 10
th place and a chance to race in the consolation finals later that evening. Nordin followed at 1:44.99 in 19
th place.
The junior Runge returned in the finals to take 11
th place and score six points for Arizona State, putting up a time of 1:43.76. With the addition of both of her times today, Runge now owns the five fastest times in Sun Devil history in the 200 free, a feat she achieved in less than two months of racing.
The 100 breast was up next with Kansakoski looking to take home three-straight All-America honors in the event. She did just that tonight, taking 14
th in the preliminaries with a time of 59.51 and returning in the consolation finals with a negative split at 59.43 for 13
th place.
Rounding out the Sun Devil individuals on the day was diver
Frida Kaellgren competing in her second event of the week. Kaellgren took the three-meter springboard today, garnering 252.40 points for 41
st place.
ASU finished the day with the 200 medley relay, sending the foursome of
Chloe Isleta, Kansakoski, Teijonsalo and
Camryn Curry to compete. They touched the wall at 1:37.71 to take 22nd place.
The Sun Devil women sit in 21st place with 35 points with one day of competition left to go. The squad will be taking the block in the 100 free, 200 breast, 1650 free and 400 free relay. Fans can keep up with the action at the links above or by following @ASUSwimDive on Twitter.
