Cal Travels To Saint Mary's Then Hosts San Jose State For Senior Day

Senior Day is here for the No. 12 Cal beach volleyball team. The Bears will celebrate their three seniors is a pregame ceremony on Friday before their home dual against San Jose State. But before that, Cal will travel to Moraga for a rematch against No. 18 Saint Mary's on Wednesday, Last Saturday, the Bears shut out both Saint Mary's and UC Davis in Berkeley.Â
SENIOR DAY SET FOR FRIDAY, MARCH 29
Cal will celebrate its seniors on Friday in a pre-match ceremony. Cal's seniors include
Grace Campbell, a member of the No. 3 pair,
Mia Merino, a member of the No. 4 pair, and
Karina Langli. These seniors have been with Cal during four formative years where the program flourished into one of the top beach volleyball teams in the country. "This group of seniors has been a part of our team's growth over the past four years. They were part of our program in just our beginning stages and helped form the foundations of what we've grown to become," Head Coach
Meagan Owusu said.
CAL SHUTS OUT NO. 18 SAINT MARY'S AND UC DAVIS
The Bears put out a dominant performance last Saturday, shutting out both No. 18 Saint Mary's and UC Davis. The victory against Saint Mary's was the first shutout the Bears have completed against a ranked opponent. While the team enjoyed strong performances across the board, No. 4 pair Merino and
Abby Waldburger outdid themselves, winning all four of their sets including demolishing UC Davis 21-5, 21-7.Â

Derek Olson made a few lineup changes ahead of last week's Saint Mary's and UC Davis duals. Changes included moving sophomore
Maddie Micheletti from the No. 3 pair to the No. 2 pair with sophomore
Caroline Schafer and moving junior
Iya Lindahl from the No. 2 pair to the No. 3 pair with junior
Grace Campbell. Additionally the No. 4 pair of Merino and Waldburger switched places with the No. 5 pair of sophomore
Alexia Inman and junior
Madison Dueck.Â
NEW BEACH COURTS PLANNED FOR 2020
Cal beach volleyball will soon have a new facility to call home under a plan announced by Chancellor Christ in the summer of 2018. Construction is expected to begin this June and be completed by the end of the calendar year, allowing the Golden Bears to compete on the new courts for the 2020 season. The beach volleyball facility will remain on the Clark Kerr Campus, moving to a new location near the intersection of Sports Lane and Dwight Way. It will feature four sand courts, as well as permanent spectator seating, restrooms and a scoreboard.
CAL MAINTAINS ITS RANKINGS BY DIG MAGAZINE AND AVCA
There was no change in rankings for Cal by either of the major college volleyball polls. Cal maintained its No. 8 position in the most recent DiG Magazine poll and its No. 12 position in the most recent ACVA coaches poll.Â
ABOUT NO. 18 SAINT MARY'SÂ
• This will be second match-p between Cal and Saint Mary's in the last five days. The Bears defeated the Gaels 5-0 in Berkeley last Saturday.
• Cal and Saint Mary's split their two meetings last year, with both matches being decided by a single point.Â
• Saint Mary's started the season unranked by the AVCA but has steadily climbed the ranks to its No. 18 position.Â
ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE
•The Spartans are riding a four-dual win streak into their clash with the Bears.Â
•Cal defeated San Jose State by scores of 4-1, 5-0, and 5-0 in their three meetings last season.Â
•The Spartans have yet to beat a ranked team this season, falling once to No. 17 Stanford and twice to No. 18 Saint Mary's.
