April 10, 2019 | Volleyball

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team assistant coach Evan Sanders has been named a recipient to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 2019 Thirty Under 30 Award.

"Honored and humbled to receive this award knowing the crowd I'm among this year as well as joining the past recipients, many of which I have admired and respected for a very long time," said Sanders. "This sport is surrounded by amazing coaches making amazing contributions to continue to grow the game. I am grateful to be recognized as one of those."

The award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels. Recipients must be younger than 30-years old in 2018.

"Evan is one of the top young coaches in the country and very deserving of this recognition," said head coach Jesse Mahony. "Our players at Colorado benefit from her knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for developing young women every day."

Sanders, a Lafayette, Colo., native and Washington alum, joined the CU staff in 2016 and works as the setter coach and offensive coordinator for the Buffs. She has mentored Brynna DeLuzio and Jenna Ewert to consecutive Pac-12 All-Freshman honors, as well as DeLuzio being named an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American.

In 2017 Sanders helped the Buffaloes return to the NCAA Tournament and advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 20 years. CU recorded the third-best win total with a 24-10 overall record. This season she helped CU return to the NCAA Tournament, marking the first consecutive trips since 2013-14.

Prior to her time at Colorado, Sanders was a volunteer assistant for the University of Texas when the team competed in the National Championship.

Of the thirty recipients, 11 are NCAA Division I women's coaches, six in high school/club, four in NCAA Division III and NCAA Division II, two in NCAA Division I-II Men, and one in NCAA Division III Men, Two-Year College and NAIA.
