Vaughn Makes Golden Spikes Midseason List
Cal First Baseman Is The Returning 2018 Winner Of Prestigious Award
BERKELEY – Cal junior first baseman
Andrew Vaughn was selected to the midseason watch list for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award, as announced by USA Baseball on Wednesday.
Last season, Vaughn became the first Cal player ever to win the prestigious award, given annually to the best amateur baseball player in the country. He also became just the sixth underclassman to win the Golden Spikes and the fourth to return to school the season after claiming the award.
Vaughn is enjoying another standout campaign so this season, hitting .344 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI in 28 games while ranking in the top 25 nationally in both on-base and slugging percentage.
The midseason list consists of 40 players, although those who didn't make the cut can still play their way into consideration. The Golden Spikes Advisory Board and USA Baseball will announce a pool of 25 semifinalists on May 15, and voting will then take place among a group that includes a mix of media members, professional baseball officials, past Golden Spikes winners and USA Baseball staff to eventually produce three finalists. Fan voting, held from May 15-26, will also account for a small percentage of the final results.
The winner will be announced June 14.
This marks the fifth time the Bears have had someone make the Golden Spikes midseason watch list, including Vaughn last season. Others included infielder
Tony Renda (2012), catcher/pitcher Andrew Knapp (2013) and catcher
Brett Cumberland (2016).
