Men's Golfers Finish 12th At ASU Thunderbird Invitational

April 13, 2019 | Men's Golf

Freshman Max Posts Top CU Finish

PHOENIX — The University of Colorado men's golf team did not have the final round it was looking to achieve here Saturday, slipping one spot into a 12th place finish in Arizona State's Thunderbird Invitational.

No. 2 and host Arizona State led from start to finish, posting a 20-under par team score of 832, which easily outdistanced No. 7 Texas by 12 shots, as the Longhorns ended at 8-under 844.  No. 32 UCLA moved from fifth to third with a 7-under 845, leapfrogging top-ranked Oklahoma State in the process; the Cowboys took fourth with a 2-under 850.  No. 23 North Carolina State rounded out the top five with an even-par 852 total.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 76 nationally, were in 11th after two rounds, but were in striking distance of improving their standing in a field with five top 25 and nine top 40 teams competing.  Instead, the opposite occurred, as CU recorded the high score in the final round – a 10-over 294, to finish with a 22-over 874 total and ahead of only Utah in the end.

Freshman Kristoffer Max shot a final round 1-under par 70 to finish tied for 37th with a 4-over 217 on the 7,333-yard, par-71 Papago Golf Course layout.  It was the first time this season he posted the best overall score by a Buffalo to lead the team in an event, and the first time a freshman has done so since the fall of 2016, when Morton Hansen paced the CU attack on two occasions.

Max had a team-high four birdies, in fact half of Colorado's eight total, with 11 pars and three bogeys Saturday.  For the weekend, he had eight birdies and 36 pars against nine bogeys and one triple.  He played the par-5s at 1-under, the par-4s at 2-over and the par-3s at 3-over and birdied the par-5 No. 9 hole to close his day to get under par, the fourth time this year he finished a tournament with a subpar round.

Junior Daniel O'Loughlin fashioned a final round 3-over 74, as he tied for 41st overall with a 5-over 218 total for 54 holes.  He had a birdie and 13 pars with four bogeys Saturday, and finished up with 38 pars overall that tied for the team-high.  He managed just four birdies over the three rounds, unusually low for CU's leader (102 on the year) but also scored his first eagle of the season which came in the second round.  He was also the only Buff here not to score worse than bogey on any hole.

Freshman John Paterson shot a 4-over 76 to finish with a 9-over 222 total, which tied him 56th.  He had two birdies Saturday which gave him a team-high 10 for the tournament; he also had 27 pars, 15 bogeys and two doubles.

Junior Ross Macdonald closed things out with a 3-over 74, which gave him a 10-over 223 total that tied him for 59th place.  He had a birdie and 14 pars against two bogeys and a double, the latter coming on his eighth hole (No. 17) of the day; he parred 10 of his final 11 holes.

Sophomore Trevor Olkowski struggled in the final round, as he endured three bogeys and two triples (back-to-back) that led to an 80; that put him at 13-over 223 for the tournament, tying him for 67th.  He had no holes under par for the first time in 33 rounds this season, though the second time without a birdie; he had an eagle in the second round in New Mexico's Tucker Invitational.  He matched O'Loughlin with a four birdies and a team-high 38 pars this weekend.

"Kristoffer had a nice round today," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Otherwise, I thought we competed but just didn't have our best. It was a frustrating week overall as we were close to having a good tournament. Top to bottom this is the most challenging event we play in all year and it was a good opportunity. The guys have really been working hard and we are confident it is going to pay off in a big way soon.

Arizona State's Chun An Yu maintained his second round lead in going on to win medalist honors, finishing with a 2-under 68 for a 12-under 201 score.  That bested Texas' Cole Hammer by four shots, who closed with a 67.

This was CU's tune-up ahead of the Pac-12 Championships later this month, which are set for April 22-24 in Eugene.

NOTES: Colorado is now 85-80-1 against Division I competition, which is the first criteria to qualify for the NCAA Championships being a winning record against the competition; the Buffaloes need to finish eighth or higher in the Pac-12 meet to stay above .500 … Colorado had the fourth most pars (175) in the field, but the fewest birdies (31) … The Buffaloes played the par-3s the sixth-best here (15-over), but was down the line on the par-4s (33-over, 12th) and on the par-5's (last, at 7-under) … CU as a team only had eight holes worse than bogey (five doubles, three triples); that was the same number as No. 1 Oklahoma State (seven doubles, one triple) … O'Loughlin has now not had a hole worse than bogey in 27 of 33 rounds this season; he continues to lead the team in stroke average at 71.85 ... The average score for the tournament (239 total rounds) was 72.70; it was just slightly below that for the final round (72.60) …
