TEMPE – In their first weekend away from Tempe since completing the home slate, the Sun Devils seemed right at home as they put together a solid weekend of competition in La Jolla, California, and College Station, Texas.

On the west coast, the Devils picked up two wins in the throwing events when Beatrice Llano and Samantha Noennig won the hammer throw and shot put invitational sections, respectively.

Llano led off the weekend with a win when she launched the hammer 68.71m/225-5 feet to win the contest by 25 feet. Llano already owns the national lead in the hammer, but the throw today would also be the leading mark by two feet.

Noennig scored a win and an outdoor PR in the shot put Saturday in La Jolla. The reigning indoor champion became the first collegiate woman to record a mark over 58 feet in the outdoor shot put in 2019.

Her throw from the Sun Angel Classic led the nation for only six days before a woman from Alabama bested Noennig's throw by three inches on Thursday. The Sun Devil sophomore then reclaimed the lead two days later, putting a gap of more than seven inches between her throw and the second-best.

Out in the Lone Star State, windy conditions didn't prevent the Devils from performing, but they did force the men's pole vault to be canceled after only one Aggie senior cleared a bar.

The women's pole vault went off without a hitch and two Sun Devils finished Friday's competition in the top three. Freshman Myka Steinbeisser and sophomore Tommi Hintnaus both cleared 3.73m/12-2.75 feet, but the former owned a slight edge thanks to a clean clearance at the height and took second while Hintnaus snagged third place.

In the other vertical jump, junior Elijah Hughes scored his first win of the outdoor season in the high jump. Hughes cleared 2.09m/6-10.25 on his first attempt and was one of just two men jumping at 2.12m/6-11.5.

Two newcomers added to their already impressive careers with a couple of top-three finishes in the sprints.

Freshman Nia Brown finished third in the 100-meter dash with a near personal best time of 11.64, and Josephine Anokye finished third in the 200 in 24.01 just after clocking an 11.76 in the 100.

All-Americans Kentre Patterson and Jessica Barreira each earned top-three finishes in the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump, respectively, and Barreira also finished fifth in the long jump.

While C.J. Maree was the only mid-distance Devil competing this weekend, more of the middle-distance and distance athletes will join the fun on the road next weekend as the Devils head to the City of Angels.
