PULLMAN, Wash. –
Collin Montez raced home after the ball got away from the Oregon catcher for an 8-7 win in 10 innings at Bailey-Brayton Field Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Cougars received three-hit games from
Dillon Plew and
Collin Montez, recorded 13 hits and stole five bases, the most since 2017. WSU took a 7-3 into the ninth inning but Oregon tied the game with a two-out grand slam to right field.
Â
In the first, Plew led off with a walk,
Danny Sinatro reached on an Oregon error and both moved up a base on a
Andres Alvarez sacrifice bunt before
Jack Smith doubled to left-centerfield to give WSU a 2-0 lead.
Â
In the second,
Garrett Gouldsmith led off the inning with a single back up the middle, was bunted to second and later scored on a Plew RBI-single to left field.
Â
In the fourth, Oregon finally got to Cougar starter
Tyson Guerrero with a solo homer to left field to cut the WSU lead to 3-1.
Â
In the fifth, the Cougars put runners on second and third with one out and pushed one run across on an Oregon fielding error and Kolden later drove an 0-2 pitch into right-centerfield for a two-out two-run double and a 6-1 WSU lead. In the sixth, Plew led off the inning with a single to right field, was bunted to second and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an
Andres Alvarez RBI-single the other way into right field for a 7-1 advantage.
Â
In the seventh, Oregon took advantage of a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch to score a pair of runs on two sacrifice flyouts to cut the WSU lead to 7-3.
Â
In the ninth, Oregon loaded the bases after a walk, an infield single and another walk. WSU went to the bullpen for freshman righthander
Connor Barison who struck out the first batter he faced and followed with a fly out to left field for the second out but the next batter lofted a ball the other way and just over the right wall for a game-tying grand slam.
Â
In the 10
th, Montez beat out a high-chopper infield single to second base that the Duck second baseman threw away on the play, putting Montez on second base. With
Brody Barnum at bat, Montez moved up to third on a wild pitch and two pitches later came home as the ball four pitch to Barnum got away from the Duck catcher, allowing Montez to race home for the game-winner.
