CU Doubles Upset No.15 Pair in Nation on Senior day

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team fell to No.3 Stanford, 4-0, this Sunday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts after celebrating senior day for senior Annabelle Andrinopoulos.
 
Colorado (10-12, 3-6 Pac-12) finishes the home season with 4-3 home record. Stanford (17-1, 9-0 Pac-12) clinched a share of the Pac-12 regular season title with the win.
 
The lone win for the Buffaloes today was the largest with the No.50-ranked doubles pair in Andrinopoulos and Monica Malinen taking down the No.15 ranked pair from Stanford in Kimberly Yee and Caroline Lampl. Malinen and Andrinopoulos jumped out to a 3-2 lead and never looked back. The pair had their backs against the wall with a 5-3 lead and the other two doubles matches finishing but closed out the game for the victory minutes before the Cardinal clinched the doubles point.
 
The Buff duo had a stellar weekend, upsetting two nationally ranked team after defeating the No.27-ranked pair from Cal on Friday.
 
The other two CU pairs fell by scores of 6-3 as Sara Nayar and Megan Forster fell to No.29 Emily Arbuthnott and Michaela Gordon in the No.2 doubles match, while Tallulah Farrow and Ky Ecton fell to the 41st ranked pair in Melissa Lord and Niluka Madurawe.
 
The singles matches didn't go CU's way as the Cardinal took every set in route to the sweep. The closest set was Farrow against No. 77 Janice Shin in the first set of the No.5 singles match. The two tied the set 5-5, but Shin went on to take the win 7-5. The match was clinched before either could win a game in the second set.
 
Stanford sealed the win with victories in the No.6, No.1 and No.2 singles matches. The 92nd ranked player in Emma Higuchi took the first point, defeating Ecton 6-3, 6-0 in the No.6 singles match. No.21 Michaela Gordon defeated Nayar in the No.1 singles match with consecutive 6-1 sets. No.35 Lord clinched the match 6-1, 6-2 against Malinen in the No.2 singles match.
 
Also for Colorado, Andrinopoulos lost the first set against No.66 Lampl 6-3 and was down 5-4 when the match was clinched. Forster was tied in the second set against No.27 Arbuthnott 2-2, but lost the first 6-4.
 
The Buffaloes finish the regular season next Saturday at Utah at 11 a.m. The team then travels to Ojai, Calif., for the Pac-12 Championship with the first round set for Wednesday April 24.
