No. 22 Buffs Breeze Past Bears, 15-6

Cal Fell Behind Early Against No. 22 Colorado And Couldn't Rebound

BOULDER, Colo. - No. 22 Colorado scored three times in the game's first four minutes and maintained that control throughout the contest as the Buffaloes defeated California, 15-6, Sunday afternoon on the Colorado campus.

Cal fell to 6-10, 3-6 on the year.

Kirsten Swanson posted four points on three goals and one assist, with the hat trick all taking place in the second half. Swanson now leads the Bears in points and goals with 48 and 37, respectively. Nikki Zaccaro recorded three assists, and she paces the Golden Bears in assists with 20 helpers this season.

Colorado scored the first five goals of the day before Caroline Corzel got the Bears on the board, converting on her free-position shot attempt. Ashley Ward scored later in the half, but the Buffaloes took a 12-2 lead into the halftime break.

Swanson opened the scoring in the second half, but Colorado maintained its healthy lead throughout the second half.

Though she only collected one ground ball in one half of play, that was enough for Jenny Wilkens to set the school record for career ground balls. She currently stands at 163 for her career, surpassing Hilary Lynch's 162 (2004-07). Her team-leading 44 ground balls this season are tied for fourth in school single-season history.

The Bears stayed strong on the draws, gaining the advantage in that stat category, 17-5, but the stingy Colorado defense prevented the Cal offense from really generating any consistent success on Sunday.

Marisa Kuberra led the way in draws with a career-high of nine, while Eliza Christman boasted four to add to her team lead of 72, which ranks tied for third in school single-season history. Christman also scored in the second half.

Entering the game in the second half, Makayla Ward made seven saves.

Ella Annest and Lizabanks Campagna each caused two turnovers. Campagna also collected three draws and a ground ball.

Cal closes out the regular season next Friday at Stanford at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. The following week, the Bears return to Eugene, Ore. for the Pac-12 Tournament.
