Sun Devil Men's Golf Tries For 13th Pac-12 Championship April 22-24 in Eugene

ON TO EUGENE: The Sun Devil men's golf team, currently on a three-tournament win streak, hits the road to Oregon for the 60th annual Pac-12 Championship to be held April 22-24 at the Eugene Country Club (par 71/7,044 yards). ASU has won its past three tournaments and has had a different medalist in each one. Mason Andersen (Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic) got the trophy party started on March 11-12, Alex del Rey jumped in on the fun at Tucson's National Invitational on March 18-19 and then Chun An Yu won ASU's Thunderbird Collegiate on April 12-13 at Papago Golf Club. ASU won the John Burns Intercollegiate (Feb. 21-23) and has placed second in five other tournaments. Pac-12 Networks will air live from the finishing holes on Wednesday, April 24, at 2 p.m. PT.

THE LINEUP: ASU's lineup will consist of juniors Chun An Yu, Alex del Rey, and Blake Wagoner, sophomores Mason Andersen and Won Jun Lee and freshman Cameron Sisk. Tee times start at 7:15 with Chun An Yu hitting last at 8:10 a.m.

CRAZY STAT: Six Sun Devils won earned or shared medalist honors this year. Jino Sohn and James Leow tied for first at the 37-player 2019 Arizona Intercollegiate individual tournament (Jan. 28-29). Alex del Rey won the 84-player National Invitational March 18-19 and freshman Camerson Sisk earned the Sonoran Showdown 20-player event, with both events taking place in Tucson. Sophomore Mason Andersen won a playoff to claim the 91-player field at San Diego's Lamkin Grips Classic on March 11-12, and then Chun An Yu put his name in the 2019 winner's column April 12-13 at ASU's Thunderbird Collegiate.

PAC-10/12 SUCCESS AT ASU: Arizona State has won 12 Pac-10 titles in its 40 seasons, including a conference record six straight from 1995-2000. In addition to the six straight Pac-10 titles, ASU's other six Pac-10 titles were in 1979 (its first year in the league), 1981, 1989, 1990, 1993 and 2008. ASU tied for the league title in 2005 with Washington but lost on a tiebreaker formula, and the league decided to go to a playoff format after that season.

GOLFWEEK RANKINGS: ASU is ranked second in the April 14 Gofweek rankings, behind only Oklahoma State. Other Pac-12 teams in the top-25 include USC (seventh), California (tenth) and Stanford (21st). ASU is 23-5-1 vs. the top five, 52-7-1 vs. top-10, 93-8-1 vs. top-100 and 129-8-1 overall. Chun An Yu is ranked sixth, Alex del Rey is No. 35 and Mason Andersen is No. 49.

SUN DEVILS AS PAC-10/12 MEDALISTS: Jon Rahm won the 2016 title and Paul Casey won three straight Pac-10 titles from 1998-2000, which is a conference record for consecutive Pac-10/12 titles. Other Sun Devils who have won the Pac-10 championship are Scott Johnson (1997), Phil Mickelson (1990), co-medalists Dan Forsman and Tony Grimes (1981), Jim Bertoncino (co-medalist in 1980) and co-medalists Scott Watkins and Dan Croonquist (1979).

TERRITORIAL CUP POINT ON THE LINE: A Territorial Cup® Series point is on the line at every men's golf Pac-12 championship, as the Sun Devil have had the upper hand recently in the series. ASU has finished better than Arizona in 12 of the past 14 Pac-12 men's golf championships, missing Territorial Cup Series points only in 2011 and 2012.

ASU'S 2008 PAC-10 TITLE: At the 2008 Pac-10 Championships at The Meadow Club (par-71, 6,686 yards) in Fairfax, Calif., ASU, playing with three freshmen, two sophomores and a senior, captured its eighth Pac-10 title in 16 years under head coach Randy Lein in a one-hole playoff over defending conference champion USC (#2 Golfstat/#3 Golfweek). ASU trailed by 16 to the Trojans after the first round. ASU shot 354-361-356-364 and tied with the Trojans (338-374-357-366) at 15-over par 1,435.

BUSHNELL COACHES POLL: ASU is No. 2 in the April 19 Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll, behind only Oklahoma State. Also ranked are USC (sixth), Cal (12) and Stanford (T-17).

QUIETLY HAVING A GOOD SEASON: Lost in the chatter about six individual winners and three straight team titles is the solid season freshman Cameron Sisk is having, as his 70.97 stroke average is currently the best by a Sun Devil freshman, with some pretty good golfers on the list.

2018 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP: The @SunDevilMGolf team couldn't sustain momentum in the final round of the 2018 Pac-12 Championship, but something great came out of the trip to the Rolling Hills Country Club (Par 71/7,130 yards) in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. Freshman Koichiro Ishika closed out a stellar championship with a 2-under 69 and finished at 11-under 273 (69-69-66-69) with 19 birdies (tied for fourth) and was 7-under on the par-4 holes. He entered the tournament with seven rounds in the 60s, he left with 11. He was one of only five players to shoot 69 or better in each of the four rounds and was easily the best freshman finisher. USC won their first Pac-12 golf title since 2011 and 20th overall as breezy conditions kept scores in check for the final day. The Trojans managed to post a 4-under for the final round to finish at 31-under par, four strokes ahead of second-place Colorado (27-under) and eight strokes clear of third-place ASU (23-under). The Trojans are the first team to host and win the Pac-12 Championships since Washington in 2009. Junior Justin Suh of USC won the individual title at 16-under 268 (68-64-65-71). Sophomore Alex del Rey tied for 16th and was 5-under in the final two rounds and shot a 3-under 281 (73-71-67-70). Both freshman Mason Andersen (71-70-67-76) and junior Jino Sohn (71-70-74-69) tied for 27th at even-par 284.

2017 PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP: Arizona State secured a Territorial Cup® Series point with its sixth-place finish at the 58th Pac-12 Championship in Boulder, shooting a 42-over 1,092 (362-374-356) in the weather-shortened championship held at the Boulder Country Club. Play was shortened to 54 holes after snow wiped out Saturday's round. ASU was led by freshman Chun An Yu, who posted 6-over 216 and finished tied for 14th. Freshmen posted the best scores of the weekend for ASU, as Blake Wagoner had a 68 in the second round while Alejandro Del Rey Gonzalez had a 69 on Sunday.

2019 NCAA REGIONALS (MAY 13-15): The NCAA Men's Golf Committee will select 81 teams and 45 individuals for regional competition including automatic qualifiers (28) and at-large teams (53). The selections will be announced Wednesday, May 1. Three of the six regionals will have 13 teams and 10 individuals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals. Five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional shall advance to the finals.
