Beavers are Texas-Bound for NCAA Championships

THE MEET
The No. 8 Oregon State gymnastics team (21-7) has advanced to compete at NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas ... The meet will be held at the Fort Worth Convention Center Arena ... Competition begins Friday with the semifinal rounds of team competition; Oregon State is in the evening session beginning at 6 p.m. CDT. The top two finishers in each session advance to Finals on Saturday at 6 p.m. CDT ... The rest of the evening session includes No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 5 Denver and No. 8 Georgia ... The afternoon session consists of No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 LSU, No. 6 Utah and No. 7 Michigan ... This marks the 26th trip to the NCAA Championships for Oregon State and is the 29th national championships appearance (including AIAW) ... The Beavers' trip to Fort Worth is the first appearance at NCAA Championships since 2017 and the 10th time in the last 14 years ... OSU has already guaranteed its' best finish since taking 8th in 2010 and 2011.
 
MEDIA
The entirety of the 2019 NCAA Championships will be televised. Friday's semifinal Session I will air on ESPN2, while Session II, in which the Beavers will compete, will air on either ESPNU or ESPN2. Saturday's finals will be broadcast on ESPNU. Bart Conner be on play-by-play with Kathy Johnson Clarke providing analysis and Holly Rowe will report from the competition floor ... ROTATION ORDER
For the first time this season, Oregon State begins the meet on the floor exercise. OSU will follow Oklahoma throughout the evening, while Denver will follow the Beavers. This rotation means the Beavers will finish the meet on the balance beam. See the table below for more details.

LAST TIME ON THE COMPETITION FLOOR
The Beavers entered the NCAA Corvallis Regional as the fourth-seeded team and put together their best meets of the season on back-to-back nights in the new regional format. Oregon State earned a second-place finish to top-seeded Florida in the Second Round. The Beavers registered a season-best 49.500 on the balance beam to start the meet and Sabrina Gill scored a career-best 9.925 on the uneven bars to tie for top honors and earning the title of regional champion. OSU notched its second-highest score of the season at 197.125 ... In the Regional Final on Saturday, the Beavers hit 24-for-24 routines for the second time in 2019 to hold off Florida in the final routine. Needing a 9.750 on the floor with its final routine, Kaitlyn Yanish scored 9.90 to send the Beavers to Texas.

OSU AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Here are some quick hitters about Oregon State's history at NCAA Championships:
•  Oregon State has qualified as a team to NCAA Championships 26 times and has 29 total appearances in total (including AIAW).
•  With the new postseason format, OSU is pursuing its first berth in the four-team finals on Saturday.
•  Five OSU gymnasts have combined to win seven individual national titles. The last OSU gymnast to win a national title was in 1993 when Amy Durham won the title on the floor exercise - Laurie Carter won on the beam in 1981; Mary Ayotte-Law, and mother of OSU junior Jaime Law, won on floor in 1982; Heidi Anderson won on beam in 1984; and Joy Selig won on beam in 1989 and 1990 and on the floor in 1990.

RETURNING TO NATIONALS
Oregon State is back at NCAA Championships for the 26th time in program history. However, after missing out in 2018, the Beavers have five gymnasts that have performed on the season's final night. Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, Sabrina Gill, Mary Jacobsen, Isis Lowery and McKenna Singley each competed in the NCAA Semifinals in St. Louis in 2017.

ALL-AMERICANS
Kaitlyn Yanish is currently the only All-American on the Oregon State squad. Yanish has been named as a WCGA Regular Season Second Team All-American in 2018 and '19.

QUICKLY
The Beavers concluded the regular season ranked No. 8 ... all four of OSU's lineups are ranked among the top 20 in the nation. The floor exercise lineup is the highest ranked for the Beavers at No. 10 (49.370 national qualifying score), while the vault (49.140) is ranked at No. 15, balance beam (49.160) is at No. 16, and the uneven bars lineup is tied for 20th (49.145) ... At the NCAA Regional Championships in Corvallis, Sabrina Gill scored 9.925 on the bars in the second round to tie for the win becoming a regional champion ... Tanya Chaplin is in her 22nd season as the Beavers' head coach and has the most wins in school history with 422.

OREGON STATE NOTES
Here are some quick hitters about the Oregon State gymnastics team in 2019:
• The Beavers returned 22 out of 24 routines from the 2018 NCAA Regionals lineup this season. However, only 14 of those routines remain in the lineup as of the regular season finale.
• Oregon State has 'hit' 290 out of 312 (92.9%) routines in 2019 ... in comparison, the Beavers 'hit' 274 out of 288 (95.1%) routines last year.
• The Beavers have hit 24-for-24 only twice this season - against California, Feb. 17 and in the Regional Finals, April 6.
• OSU has counted three falls in 2019 - against Utah (beam), against Alaska and Bowling Green (beam), and at Pac-12 Championships (beam).
• Through 13 meets, OSU's routine production breakdown looks like this: Juniors have performed 116 of 312 routines in 2019 (37.2%), seniors have produced 93 of 312 (29.8%), sophomores 68 of 312 (21.8%) and freshmen 35 of 312 (11.2%).
• OSU scored 197.450 against UCLA, tying the sixth-highest score in school history.
• Seventeen of OSU's 20 opponents on the 2019 schedule are ranked in this week's Top 36, including eight among the top 10; No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 LSU, No. 4 Denver, No. 5 Utah, No. 7 Georgia, No. 9 Kentucky and No. 10 Florida.
• Seventeen OSU gymnasts have earned a 3.0 GPA or better during each term this year (fall and winter) - 12 of those were 3.5 or above including three 4.0s during winter term. The Beavers represent seven different colleges among their majors and two study in the Honors College.
• Thirteen of the 21 gymnasts on the 2019 team competed in at least one meet for the Beavers last season
• There were four additions to the squad this fall with the arrivals of freshmen Leah Bivrell, Madi Dagen, Alex McClung and Kristina Peterson.
• Redshirt junior Lacy Dagen and sophomore Lexie Gonzales as well as freshmen Madi Dagen and Kristina Peterson made their Beaver debuts in the season opener at Illinois ... Sophomore Colette Yamaoka made her career debut against Utah.
• The Beavers have three seniors on the team (Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, Mary Jacobsen and McKenna Singley). The trio had combined to perform 224 routines in their career entering the season.
• The Beavers have three gymnasts that hail from the state of Oregon - Lena Greene (Tigard), Jaime Law (Corvallis) and Alex McClung (Salem).
• OSU also has three gymnasts from outside the United State - Mariana Colussi-Pelaez and Sabrina Gill (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) and Isis Lowery (Melbourne, Australia).

ALL-PAC-12 TEAM
Three Oregon State gymnasts were part of the Pac-12's All-Conference teams when the awards were announced last month. Kaitlyn Yanish was recognized as a first teamer on the floor exercise. In addition, Madi Dagen garnered second team honors on the balance beam and Isis Lowery was named as a second teamer on the floor.

ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS
Oregon State placed 10 gymnasts on the Pac-12 All-Academic teams, the most in the conference. In all, 17 of 21 OSU gymnasts posted GPA's of 3.0 or better during the winter for the second term in a row. Mariana Colussi-Pelaez (microbiology) and Lacy Dagen (sociology) were all named to the first team. Savanna Force (kinesiology), Mary Jacobsen (computer science) and McKenna Singley (sociology) each received second team honors while Halli Briscoe (business adminstration), Lena Greene (bioengineering), Maela Lazaro (BioHealth sciences), Isis Lowery (digital communication arts) and Colette Yamaoka (biology) were honorable mention.

INCREDIBLE SENIORS
• The trio of Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, Mary Jacobsen and McKenna Singley has combined to hit 75 out of 79 routines thus far in 2019.
Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, a microbiology major with an option in pre-med and minors in chemistry and Spanish, learned she has been accepted to medical school at University College Cork in Ireland.
Mary Jacobsen, who studies computer science, has landed a job with Google upon graduation later this spring.
McKenna Singley, who is majoring in sociology with an option in crime and justice, has recently been accepted to the University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law.

SEEKING PERFECTION
OSU has six gymnasts that have 'hit' all of their routines in 2019 including: Mary Jacobsen (38-38), Isis Lowery (32-32), Colette Yamaoka (12-12), Destinee Davis (7-7), Niya Mack (2-2) and Kristina Peterson (1-1).

CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS
In the preseason coaches poll, the Pac-12 Conference had all eight of its teams ranked in the Top 36 and all eight qualified to NCAA Regionals. Three of those teams advanced to NCAA Championships including No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 Utah and No. 15 Oregon State.

LOADING UP FOR 2020
In November, three gymnasts signed the National Letters of Intent to join the Oregon State gymnastics program for the 2019-20 academic year. Kayla Bird (Chandler, Ariz.), Jenna Domingo (Honolulu, Hawai'i)  and Jane Poniewaz (Henderson, Nev.) are scheduled to enroll at Oregon State this coming summer ... In addition, 2018 signee Jade Carey (Phoenix, Ariz.), who has deferred her enrollment this year to train for the U.S. National Team, plans to attend OSU in the future. Carey earned a pair of silver medals for Team USA at the 2017 World Championships.
