PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CALIF. – The USC Trojans posted a team score of 1-under (283) in the first round to pace the field and are six shots ahead of second-place STANFORD after the first day of competition at the Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.

• Stanford’s Albane Valenzuela posted a blistering back nine score of 30 as she finished with six birdies on her final eight holes. She carded a 6-under (65) to take a four-stroke lead over ARIZONA STATE’s Olivia Mehaffey and WASHINGTON STATE’s Amy Chu, who each posted scores of 2-under (69).

• Valenzuela’s round of 65 matches the lowest score for a single round in Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships history. Three others shot 65 – Lizette Salas, USC (2009, Stanford Golf Course); Wanasa Zhou, Arizona (2015, Boulder Country Club); Gabriella Then, USC (2016, Ruby Hill Country Club)

Gabriela Ruffels and Alyaa Abdulghany each fired a 1-under (70) to pace the Trojans. The duo are tied for fourth in the individual race.

• USC coach Justin Silverstein on today’s performance by the Trojans, “We were trying to be really conservative today. We play a lot of rounds of golf here and when you start chasing birdies on this golf course you can really get yourself into a lot of trouble. So, we tried to play really conservative over the first six holes and try to make as many pars as we can. If you happen to make a bogey, fine, don’t make a double, just try to limit it to a bogey, then try to pick up shots later in the round. Picking conservative targets with our iron shots was key to our day.”

• Stanford’s Valenzuela on her score of 65, “It was harder than it looked as I had to make a lot of 6-footer to 12-footers for par. The greens are really fast and I didn’t really quite get the pace on the front nine, but my short putts were really, really good and I managed to make a lot of pars. Then on the back nine I had very similar putts that I had on the front nine, but his time for birdie and made quite a few on the back and was very happy with my round.” On her back nine score of 30, “The front nine I stayed very patient as I could have made a lot of bogies, but I really stayed focused. On the back nine, I made a lot of birdies, but did not feel like it as I just stayed very committed to my shots. I don’t think I’ve ever had a six-under back nine in my life, so this was definitely my best one and happy it happened today.”

• The second round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. PT. The Championships will conclude with the final round on Wednesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT, with live coverage of the final round provided by Pac-12 Networks.
