Beavers Host No. 2 Bruins for Three-Game Series

THIS WEEK:
• Oregon State returns home for three games against UCLA.
• This week is Oregon State's Military Appreciation Series with active and former military members receiving two complimentary tickets at the gate.

FOLLOW THE BEAVS:

• Thursday's game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles with Friday's game on Pac-12 Los Angeles. Both games will be called by Ann Schatz and Danielle Lawrie.

BEAVER EXPERIENCE: 
• Sophomore Missy Nunes continues to lead the starters with a .292 BA with 31 hits, 7 doubles, six homeruns, 24 RBIs and 18 runs. Last weekend, Nunes batted .333 with three hits, one run and one RBI.
Jessica Garcia is batting .276 with 29 hits, one double, one triple, 16 runs and 13 RBIs. Last weekend, Garcia batted .273 with three hits, one double, three RBIs and one run.
Kayleen Shafer has started in 25 games behind the plate this season batting .317 with six doubles, two homeruns, 11 RBIs and nine runs. Last weekend, Shafer recorded three hits with one double, one RBI and one run.
Mariah Mazon has started 20 games in the circle recording a 12-10 record with 15 complete games. Mazon has a 2.70 ERA while striking out 131 batters this season.
Lovie Lopez returns for a fifth year and is batting .274 with 17 hits, 14 runs and three RBIs.
Michelle Sass has seen time in 21 games making 14 starts. Sass is batting .237 with five doubles, five runs and one RBI.
Camryn Ybarra is batting .229 after seeing time in 26 games. Ybarra has six doubles, one homerun, seven RBIs and four runs.
Meehra Nelson has appeared in 19 games in the circle with a 4.11 ERA and only walking 20 batters through 76.2 innings.
• The upperclassmen are rounded out by Chance Burden, Fallon Molnar and Nerissa Eason who have each seen time in at least seven games.

SHELBY WEEKS:
• Senior Shelby Weeks is on the cusp of greatness during her senior season.
• She currently has 13 stolen bases this season and 56 on her career - one stolen base away from tying the OSU Career Program Record and two from holding the title outright.
• Weeks set the OSU Season record last season with 22 stolen bases.
• Weeks is currently batting .267 with 32 hits, six doubles, one triple and one homerun with 18 RBIs and 29 runs.
• Last weekend at Cal, Weeks batted .455 going 5-for-11 with three doubles, five RBIs and two runs.
• Weeks holds spots in OSU record book in: Season stolen bases in 2018 (No. 1 - 22),  Career stolen bases (No. 2 - 56), Career singles (No. 5. - 164) and Career runs scored (No. 6 - 129) while sitting just outside of the record book for: Season stolen bases in 2019 (has 13, 10. is 14), Career hits (has 187, 10. is 205), Bases on balls (has 66, 10. is 77) and if keeps current batting avg. for the year will be in the top 10 for career batting avg.

NEWCOMER PRESENCE:
• Oregon State added seven newcomers during the offseason: Karla Calderon, Payton Goodrich, Frankie Hammoude, Bailey McLaughlin, Izzy Owen, Ashton Phillips and Maia Rader.
• Hammoude is batting .255 and leads the team in homeruns with nine. Hammoude has 25 hits with 29 RBIs and 13 runs scored.
• Owen has seen time at both second and third base while batting .188 with 13 hits, six runs and three RBIs. Owen also has two stolen bases.
• Phillips has started 17 games in right field while batting .209. Phillips has nine hits, eight runs, one double and one RBI. Phillips has also stolen four bases.
• Rader is batting .282 after seeing time in 30 games. Rader has 22 hits, 12 runs  and eight RBIs while leading the team in triples with two.

LAST WEEKEND:
• Oregon State won the first Pac-12 series on the year against California taking the first and second game before dropping the third game.
• The Beavers scored 14 runs off 23 hits. Seven of the hits were doubles.
• Oregon State batted .264 as a team with 11 RBIs.
• OSU stole five bases over the course of the three games.
• Defensively, OSU held a 2.45 ERA and only gave up one walk through 20.0 innings. The pitching staff for the Beavers combined for 12 strikeouts.

ALWAYS AWAY:
• Oregon State was on the road for the first six weeks of the season starting with five tournaments and finishing with a three-game series at ASU.
• Of the 36 games played to date, the Beavers have been listed as the home team on only nine occasions – three include the first home series the Beavers held against Arizona and one game against Stanford.
• OSU was scheduled to have 12 home games this season, spread over four Pac-12 series. This is the fewest home games the Beavers have had since 2016.
• With two-of-three games cancelled against Stanford due to rain, OSU will play 10 games on the OSU Softball Complex if no other games get cancelled.

RANKINGS:
• Pac-12 Rankings: No. 3. Batters SO looking (72), No. 3. Stolen bases (45) and No. 5 Batters SO (240).
• The Beavers broke into the Top 25 in week three – USA Today/NFCA at No. 25 and ESPN.com/USA Softball tied at No. 23. OSU is not currently ranked.
• OSU was picked to tie for fifth in the Pac-12 Preseason Poll. Currently, the Beavers are ranked eighth in the Pac-12.

COACHING PROFILES: 
• Head coach Laura Berg hung up her cleats after nearly 20-years of playing softball and spent a year with the LAPD in 2010-11 before returning to the game as an assistant coach for the 2012 season at Oregon State.
• Berg enters her seventh season at the helm of the Oregon State program in 2019, recording four NCAA Tournament appearances. 
• Berg holds a 187-171-1 overall record and is 48-104 in Pac-12 play.
• Associate head coach Marcie Green also has experience with law enforcement. Green studied criminology at Fresno State and spent five years as a prison guard at Corcoran State Prison in California following graduation before starting to coach.
• Assistant coach Eric Leyba joins the staff after stints with the Northwest Bullets and being the head coach at Churchill High School for the past 15 years.
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Hannah Akamine is also new to the coaching staff, but not the Orange and Black. Akamine played for Berg and Green in 2015 as the starting catcher for the Beavers.
Heather Smith also returns for her 18th season as Director of Operations.

NATIONAL SOFTBALL:
Laura Berg has been announced as one of the Assistant Coaches for the Women's National Team by USA Softball. Berg will join Howard Dobson, Tairia Flowers and WNT Head Coach Ken Eriksen for the 2019 season.
• Freshman Frankie Hammoude has been named to the 2019 USA Softball Junior Women's National Training Team for the summer of 2019.
• Sophomore Mariah Mazon will be trying out for the Mexico National Team following the 2019 regular season.
• Recent OSU Softball signee, Grace Messmer, has made the Canadian Junior WNT.

NCAA TOURNAMENT:
• The 2018 season marked the fourth time the Beavers reached the NCAA Tournament under the direction of head coach Laura Berg, as well as the 14th time in program history.
• The Beavers are 32-29 all-time in their 14 tournament appearances following two wins and two losses at the Tuscaloosa Regional in 2018.
• The last time OSU won a regional was in 2006 when it played Nevada and No. 19 Baylor twice. OSU went on to play in the Women's College World Series that year.
• Berg and former head coach Kirk Walker (1995-2012) are the only head coaches in program history to reach the NCAA Tournament.

KNOW WHAT IT TAKES:
• Oregon State's coaching staff is no stranger when it comes to the NCAA Tournament and WCWS.
• Both Berg and Green played at Fresno State in the '90s and gained plenty of experience in the path to the WCWS.
• Coach Berg played from 1994-95 and 1997-98 making it to the WCWS three times and won the national championship in '98.
• Coach Green played from 1990-93 and appeared in three WCWS, including a runner-up finish in 1990.
• Volunteer assistant coach Hannah Akamine made the WCWS as the catcher for Tennessee in its 2013 runner-up finish.

• Single game tickets can be purchased at $7 for adults and $5 for youth.

2019 SCHEDULE:
• The non-conference portion of Oregon State's 2019 schedule featured a gauntlet of games over the course of five-tournaments and two non-conference games.
• OSU opened the season with the Kajikawa Classic for the ninth time in 10 years.
• The Stacy Winsberg Tournament in Long Beach and Los Angeles, Calif. featured two 2018 NCAA Regional teams, Long Beach State and Ole Miss.
• The Beavers went to Norman, Okla. to face 2018 WCWS participant, Oklahoma, and NCAA Regional qualifier Louisiana.
• Oregon State also made appearances at the UOP-Libby Matson Tournament and LMU Tournament before finishing out the non-conference schedule with a double-header at Portland State.
• The conference portion features six opponents that made varying finishes in the 2018 NCAA Tournament:
    - Cal - Regionals.
    - Arizona - Super Regionals.
    - Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon - WCWS.
    - Washington - 2018 WCWS Runner-Up.
• In total, Oregon State will face 11 opponents from the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
• 14 opponents finished with a top-100 RPI in 2018, 10 opponents had a top-50 RPI, eight had a top-25 RPI and five had a top-10 RPI.
