McMorris Leads Decathlon After Day 1
Brendel Sits In Third Place Amongst His Decathlon Group
AZUSA, Calif. – The Cal track & field team began their four meet week with two Bears competing in the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University.
Hakim McMorris began competition in the second decathlon of his career on Wednesday. The freshman, part of the first group, was back in Southern California. The Santa Ana native set personal bests in both the long jump and the 400m as he tallied 3895 points and leads after the first day.
McMorris started the day by taking second place in the 100m with a time of 11.00 seconds. He followed that up by winning the long jump and setting a four-inch personal best of 23-10.25. He was half an inch from a personal best in the shot put as he took fourth place. He followed that by tying for fifth in the high jump. McMorris closed his day with a second place finish in the 400m as he set a PR of 49.25.
Tyler Brendel, competing in his first decathlon of the year, tallied 3662 points on the first day. Brendel took third in the 100m with a time of 11.29. He carded 22-0.25 in the long jump and 40-4.00 in the shot put. The redshirt junior matched McMorris' high jump as they both leapt 6-0.50. The first day closed with the 400m as Brendel crossed the line in 49.59.
The duo will close out the decathlon Thursday as both Bears will start with the 110m hurdles. That will be followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m. McMorris will start at 10:30 a.m. while Brendel will begin at 11:30 a.m.
That will mark the end of Cal's participation at the Bryan Clay Invitational, but the weekend is just getting started for the Bears.
Paul Zeiss and
Ryan Peck will kick-off the action at the Mt. Sac Relays as the duo will compete in the 10,000m tomorrow evening.
