AZUSA, Calif. – Utah track & field opened the Bryan Clay Invitational and Multi with
Kolbi Sims competing in the heptathlon, and both
Hannah Allred and
Jade Mulvey running the 10,000-meter event at Cougar Athletic Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific on Wednesday.
Â
After four events in the heptathlon, Sims sits in eighth place overall with 3,175 points. She is currently 326 points behind the leader Ida Eikeng, who is competing unattached. Eikeng tallied 3,501 points on day one of the event. A total of 17 athletes are competing in
Group 4.
Â
Sims opened the meet registering a season-best 14.56 time in the 100-meter hurdles for a total of 901 points. She then registered a mark of 1.67m in the high jump – her highest mark in the event when competing in the heptathlon and just 0.05 meters shy of her career-best (1.73m), which she set last weekend in Salt Lake City. The mark was good enough for 818 points, bringing her total to 1,719 after two events.
Â
Sims wrapped up the day scoring 597 points with a season-best mark of 11.03m in the shot put. This was just the second time in Sims' career that she managed to toss 11.00m or higher in the event. She then went onto tally 859 points with a time of 25.30 in the 200-meter run, just 0.06 seconds off her personal-best, which she set in the heptathlon competition at the Aztec Open just a few weeks back.
Â
Sims will head into tomorrow's final day with three events remaining - the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run. She is currently 94 points back of seventh place, 114 points shy of sixth place and 124 points off the pace for fifth place. Tomorrow's portion of the heptathlon Group 4 will begin at 11 a.m. PT.
Â
"What a good day for Kolbi," said Utah head coach
Kyle Kepler. "Her season-best in both 100 hurdles and shot put, which accumulated to 125 points better than her first day at the Aztec Open a few weeks ago. She will have some work to do tomorrow, but could compete for the school record with another solid day."
Â
In the only running event for the Utes on Wednesday, Allred and Mulvey would both compete in their second 10K of the season. Allred took 16th overall in the second heat with a time of 37:30.87, while Mulvey crossed in 21st overall in the same heat with a time of 38:40.23.
Â
"Hannah and Jade both had solid efforts tonight, despite it being an evening that was a little warmer than ideal for this event," Kepler noted. "I know they would have like to set new PR's, but the effort was there."
Â
Along with Sims finishing the heptathlon on Thursday, Utah will also have athletes competing in the 5K, with the first of eight heats beginning at 6 p.m. PT. Competing in the 5000-meters tomorrow will be
Trina Moreno (heat 7),
Ashley Licata (heat 7),
Sara Leonard (heat 6),
Emma Christensen (heat 5),
Poppy Tank (heat 1),
Bella Williams (heat 2),
Scarlet Dale (heat 3), and
Astrid Lindgren (heat 8).
