PALOS VERDES ESTATES, CALIF. – The USC Trojans captured their sixth Pac-12 title, and fifth in the last 12 years, as they posted a final round team score of 2-under (282) to finish 1-under (283-286-282—851), 11 shots clear of second-place ARIZONA at the Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships at Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.

• ARIZONA STATE’s Olivia Mehaffey was the only golfer to shoot under par for each of her three rounds. Her consistent performance allowed her to post 4-under (69-70-70—209) for the Championships and put her into a tie with STANFORD’s Albane Valenzuela (65-70-74—209) atop the leaderboard. Valenzuela began the final round with a four-stroke lead over Mehaffey, but faltered on the back nine where she posted a pair of bogeys and a double bogey to drop into a tie that forced a playoff. Mehaffey went on to top Valenzuela in the first playoff hole (No. 18) to earn the individual title. She is the 13th Sun Devil to earn medalist honors, and the first since Linnea Strom in 2016.

• Mehaffey on the possibility of a playoff after finishing five holes ahead of the last group: “I was kind of sitting around and then my coach said, ‘hey Liv, you should go warm up.’ So, I went to the locker room and listened to some music and stretched a little bit and then heard there was a playoff.”

Mehaffey on the playoff hole: “I am a really aggressive player, I thrive under pressure, and that’s the player I am. So, I love moments like this and was going straight at that pin and try and make birdie. Nice to have an uphill putt and not worry about racing it by. It might have been a different story if the putt was downhill, but I felt pretty good over it and felt like I had a good read.”

• USC’s Gabriela Ruffels posted the lowest score of the day (-3) and finished in third at 3-under (70-72-68—210), one stroke back of Mehaffey and Valenzuela. ARIZONA’s Ya Chun Chang finished fourth at 2-under (72-70-69—211). Chang posted the low score of the tournament by a freshman.

• USC was led by the steady play of its top four golfers who finished among the top seven – Ruffles, Allisen Corpuz (5th, even par), Jennifer Chang (6th, 1-over), Alyaa Abdulghany (7th, 2-over).

• USC coach Justin Silverstein on USC’s victory: The girls did a really great job managing their games today. Really consistent iron play, really good speed on the greens, and made a ton of pars, which is what we wanted. We had a good game plan coming into the week and they followed it. I give them a lot of credit. A Lot of times during this week you can get frustrated and buck your plan and try and go a different route, they didn’t and they stuck to it and executed really well.”

•  Mehaffey and Valenzuela lead the Pac-12 All-Conference team (see below for complete team)
