TUCSON, Ariz. - Oregon freshman Max Vollmer and Washington sophomore Hannah Rusnak are the leaders after the first day of combined events competition at the 2019 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships at Arizona's Drachman Stadium on Saturday.

Vollmer won 3-of-5 (long jump, shot put, 400-meter run) and set personal bests in 4-of-5 decathlon events (100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, 400) on Saturday en route to 4,113 points and a 167-point cushion over CALIFORNIA freshman Hakim McMorris (3,946).

Vollmer's 4,113 total is the highest opening day total at the Conference meet since USC's Viktor Fajoyomi scored 4,181 in 2014.

McMorris shared the win in the high jump, while WASHINGTON STATE senior Ray Littles opened with a win in the 100 and is currently in third place with 3,879 points.

Vollmer, a native of Ulm, Germany, is seeking to become the 10th different Oregon decathlete and league-leading 18th all-time decathlon champion from the Ducks' program. A comeback from McMorris would be Cal's sixth win in program history and first since 2000, while a Littles triumph would be WSU's fifth and first since 2005.

Both Vollmer and McMorris are seeking to become the first freshmen to win the Conference decathlon crown since Oregon's Tommy Skipper in 2004 and only the fourth rookies to top the podium in the event (Skipper; Mike Ramos, WASH, 1983; Craig Brigham, ORE, 1973).

The final day of decathlon competition resumes Sunday at 4 p.m. PT with the 110-meter hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.

Rusnak opened with a win and personal best in the 100-meter hurdles (13.68) and closed with a runner-up finish and another PR in the 200-meter dash (24.46) to set the pace and establish a new opening-day personal benchmark with 3,422 points.

She is closely followed by Colorado senior Maja Wichhart-Donzo, who shared the win in the high jump (1.71m/5-7.25) with CU classmate Michaela Wenning and edged Rusnak in the 200 by a hundredth of a second (24.45) to sit just 41 points back at 3,381.

UCLA junior Christina Chenault currently sits third with 3,312 points, while Wenning is fourth with 3,241 and poised to give the Buffaloes an early lead in the team standings heading into next weekend's Championships.

Rusnak is seeking to join Sonja Forster in 1992 as the only Huskies to win the Conference heptathlon title. A comeback from Wichhart-Donzo or Wenning would mark the first event Pac-12 title for Colorado, while Chenault would become the first Bruin to capture the heptathlon since Tonya Sedwick won the last of her two event titles in 1991.

The heptathlon resumes Sunday with the long jump at 5:30 p.m. PT followed by the javelin and 800-meter run.
