Finale On Deck Saturday For Ducks

The Oregon softball team will host ASU in its season finale Saturday after dropping a 10-1 game Friday evening.

EUGENE, Ore. — Just one game remains in the 2019 softball season for Oregon after the Ducks played their penultimate contest Friday, dropping a 10-1 decision against Arizona State at Jane Sanders Stadium.

After a flat effort Thursday, the Ducks were more competitive Friday, but the result was the same as Oregon spent the evening digging out of an early hole.

"These guys coming out, I felt the intent to come out and win a ballgame," UO coach Melyssa Lombardi said. "What was tough for us was, it's an uphill battle just giving up five in the first inning. That's tough to do."

How It Happened: A day after the first three runners of the game reached and came around to score, ASU plated its first five batters Friday. Four of the five runs scored on soft singles that fell between the infield and outfield, with the Sun Devils not benefiting from hard contact until a two-run homer in the fifth made it 7-0.

The Ducks (22-29) saw their first two hitters of the game reach but couldn't take advantage. Oregon's first hit wasn't until the fifth, when sophomore Shaye Bowden led off with her seventh home run of the season. ASU answered in the top of the sixth with a homer for an 8-1 lead, and tacked on two more in the seventh.

At The Plate: Oregon caught some bad breaks both at the plate and in the field. While ASU rallied in the first thanks to soft contact, the Ducks had a couple sharp line drives hit right at the shortstop, by Bowden in the second and Allee Bunker in the third.

In the fourth inning, Jasmine Sievers drove a ball to deep center field that the outfielder caught with her back up against the outfield wall. Two innings later Sievers ripped a line drive to left-center that was snared by the left fielder.

"We had some balls hit hard that they caught, and you look at the other side, I don't know how many fisted balls fell in," Lombardi said. "Sometimes that's just how the game goes."

In The Circle: Dail again settled down after a slow start, until the the home-run ball she surrendered in the fifth. The UO left-hander allowed eight runs over 5 2/3 innings, on nine hits and three walks, with four strikeouts.

Dail allowed a solo home run in the sixth and was replaced by Haley Cruse, who finished the inning. Rachel Cid recorded all three outs in the seventh, allowing two inherited runners to score.

Up Next: The Ducks will conclude their 2019 season against ASU on Saturday (noon, Pac-12), with the game preceded by a ceremony to honor Oregon's four seniors.
