TUCSON, Ariz. – The Sun Devil throwers, led by school record-holder Seri Geisler, highlighted the first day of the 2019 Pac-12 Championships for Arizona State, scoring 14 points across four events for the Devils Saturday in Tucson.

Just after midnight Sunday morning, Geisler scored her first all-conference honor for the Maroon and Gold when she took second in the women's javelin throw. She wasn't alone, though, as Jessica Barreira also opened her conference tab in the jav with an eighth-place finish.

While the all-Pac-12 honor was Geisler's first, for the senior Barreira, the eighth-place finish was her ninth time scoring at a conference meet and her third time scoring in the javelin.

Just before the javelin finished, John Reniewicki scored four points for the men's squad in the longest race on the track. He finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run to become the first Sun Devil since 2014 to score in the event, and received his first all-Pac-12 honor for the feat.

Before the Championships had a lengthy weather delay, a few of Sun Devil throwers became first-time conference scorers.

Carlan Naisant opened the day and the scoring for the Sun Devils in the men's javelin. The true freshman and Arizona native made the most of his first conference outing by setting a personal best and finishing fifth in the event to score four points for ASU.

Naisant's 67.57m/221-8-foot heave moved him eighth in Sun Devil history, making him the first new addition to the top-10 list since 2016. Another true freshman, Connery McLaughlin advanced to the final of the javelin and finished ninth overall with a near personal-best of 61.38m/201-4 feet.

Later in the day, ASU got some more help on the scoreboard from Ian Schulz. The sophomore launched a big personal best of 18.05m/59-2.75 feet to advance to the final where he would go on to finish eighth and pick up a point.

After advancing to the long jump final under the sun, Derrick Monroe managed to come back after the weather delay under lights at Roy P. Drachman Stadium and score two points for ASU when he finished seventh.

Indoor mile conference champion and All-American William Paulson was the top-qualifier in the men's 1,500-meter prelim, outrunning the field in 3:46.17. The senior will get back on the track Sunday afternoon to take on a field that includes five of the 15 fastest men in the region, and three of the top-five in the West.

The sprinters had a big day despite the weather as a handful of Devils punched ticket into Sunday finals, with Marcus Reaves, Josephine Anokye, Nia Brown and Jeminise Parris all advancing to sprint finals.

By earning a lane in the women's 100-meter final, Anokye and Brown have a chance to become just the third and fourth women not from USC or Oregon to score in the event since 2016.

Both Brown and Anokye opened their days by helping the Sun Devil 4x100-meter relay team earn a lane in Sunday's championship race. Brown, Anokye, Anaya Bailey and anchor-leg Sydnee Larkin clocked ASU's 2019-best of 44.91, and will go into the final with the fifth-best time of the weekend thus far.

Reaves finished second in his heat in 10.40 and claimed a spot in his first conference final since joining the Sun Devils this past fall. Parris got through to the 100-meter hurdles final on time thanks to her season's best 13.55.

Because of the delay, several events scheduled for Saturday were moved to Sunday and the revised Pac-12 Championship schedule can be found here.

The second and final day of the 2019 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships will get going for ASU at 11 a.m. PT when Beatrice Llano and Kaylee Antill throw in the women's hammer throw. The Devils have won three-straight hammer throw titles and have a chance to make it four with Llano coming into the championships leading the nation in the event.
