O'Loughlin Slips In Standings At NCAA Northwest Regional

May 14, 2019 | Men's Golf

Shoots a second round 75

PULLMAN —University of Colorado junior golfer Daniel O'Loughlin had his struggles here Tuesday in the NCAA Northwest (Pullman) Regional, shooting a 5-over par 75 that dropped him 36 spots in the standings and likely put him out of contention of advancing individually to the NCAA Finals later this month.

O'Loughlin owns a 68-75—143 scorecard after 36 holes of play on the Palouse Ridge Golf Club course, a 7,232-yard, par-70 layout.  He had two birdies and nine pars opposite seven bogeys.  Four of the latter came between holes 12 and 17, but he did bounce back to end his round with a birdie on the par-5 18th for the second straight day.  He opened with a bogey to begin the round and made the turn at 3-over.

He is 55th in the standings, after ending round one in a tie for 19th.  To advance to the NCAA Finals, he needs to be the top individual not attached to one of the five teams that will advance; two players leading in the area at present are in with 8-under 132 scores.

"Daniel just had a tough day," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "It was a combination of things. He got off to a slow start then was out of position a few times and just couldn't get it back. He kept fighting and finished with a good birdie on 18."

Oklahoma's Blaine Hale is the individual leader after carding an 8-under 62 Tuesday; he's in at 10-under 130 through 36 holes, leading a trio of golfers by two shots.  Hale had eight birdies and 10 pars in shooting 31 on each nine in the second round.

In the team standings, No. 20 Texas A&M extended its lead from one to three strokes, owning a scores of 23-under 537; No. 5 Oklahoma (540) and No. 8 Georgia Tech (541) are on the Aggies heels, with No. 32 BYU (543) and Colorado State (548) rounding out the top five.

O'Loughlin will begin final round play on the No. 1 tee at 10:20 a.m. MDT, and for the third day in a row will be paired with the No. 3 golfers from Iona and Wright State.

NOTES: Six regional tournaments are being conducted simultaneously across the nation over the next three days.  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Finals, which will be May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. … The average score in the second round (75 players) was a bit higher than day one (70.64 compared to 70.03); it's 70.33 for 150 rounds entering the final round … O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes in stroke average this season with a 72.0 figure, which is currently tied for the eighth-best for a single season in program history … Since the regional format came into being in 1989, O'Loughlin is the fifth Buff to qualify as an individual without his teammates; his 2-under par 68 in the first round was the lowest score in that group and just the second round of the 13 that was under par.  The previous best was a 1-under 71 by Stephen Carroll in 2003.
