Yi Spectacular Again, Advances to NCAA Championships

05/15/19 | Men's Golf

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Edwin Yi went low for the third straight day, shooting a 6-under 66 in the final round of the Myrtle Beach Regional at TPC Myrtle Beach Wednesday to qualify for the NCAA Championships as an individual. Oregon saw its season come to an end though, after finishing outside the top five in seventh place at 1 under, shooting 2 under in the final round.

How it Happened: Heading into the day tied for the lead after a pair of stellar rounds, Yi picked up right where he left off with a birdie at the first. He made back-to-back birdies at seven and eight and shot a bogey-free 3-under 33 on the front nine. After a bogey at 10 dropped him back to 2 under on the day, he birdied four of his final six holes, including 17 and 18 to finish 6 under.

The senior kept pace with eventual medalist Michael Feagles of Illinois, who shot a 7-under 65, even after Feagles shot a 5-under 31 on his front nine. Yi fended off Jamie Li of Florida State, who finished 11 under, for the individual berth into the NCAA Championships.

It was a tale of two nines for Ryan Gronlund, who shot a 2-over 74 to close out his collegiate career. He shot a 6-over 42 on the front nine, but went bogey free on the second nine while making four birdies on the way to a 4-under 32 on the homeward half.

A couple of freshmen finished the tournament in a tie for 43rd at 5 over in their first tastes of NCAA postseason play. Craig Ronne shot a 1-over 73 while Yin Ho Yue turned in a 3-over 75. Kevin Geniza shot a 1-over 73 and finished 5 over in two rounds after entering the lineup as a substitute on Tuesday.

On Yi advancing to NCAA Championships…
"I am so happy for Edwin. He has worked so and been such a great player for Oregon. I'm happy that his season will continue in Arkansas."

On the season…
"The team side was disappointing to me. We couldn't get over the hump this spring and have that breakthrough event. But we will regroup and be back next year with something to prove."
