Huskies' Spring Recap

Washington men's soccer team wrapped up its spring schedule at the end of April, once again competing against some of the top local professional and college teams in the region. The Huskies schedule saw them take on pro teams Timbers 2, the RSL Monarchs and the Whitecaps U23 teams along with DI programs Portland, Seattle U, Gonzaga, Utah Valley and DII teams Seattle Pacific and Western Washington.

"We put together a great spring schedule that tested us in a number of ways," said Head Coach Jamie Clark. "By playing a variety of professional teams and different level college teams we were asked to play different ways. We managed to to have great success against any type of opponent so there is reason to be optimistic for the season ahead."

The spring season has traditionally been a chance for Clark and his staff to learn more about the squad without the pressure of wins and losses.

"The ability to play a season that isn't predicated on winning and losing, but instead learning allows us to push our limits and learn through our mistakes," said Clark. "We were able to push boundaries and play a more flowing game than every before, so hopefully we can grow this into the fall."

With five seniors graduating, the Huskies will be looking to fill a number of holes and the spring season allowed the coaches to see who would step up to fill those spots.

"Great to see Gio Miglietti step in the center forward position and score goals," said Clark. "We will miss the production of Scott Menzies, but hopefully we have another forward who has the ability to score double digit goals. It was also great to see Freddy Kleemann step in the role that Quentin Pearson held at the back. He played quite a few games for us in the fall due to injuries, but he really took on a bigger role and looked like a real presence in the back for us."

The Washington coaches also were able to see one of the Huskies' new additions in action: midfielder Imanol Rosales. Roasales, who hails from Quentaro, Mexico, played with the Mexico U18 national team and club ball with Cruz Azul U20. He enrolled at UW in the spring and had his first chance to compete with this future teammates.

"It was great to get Imanol here for spring quarter where he could adapt to the college game and get to know his teammates" said Clark. "He's a special player on the ball, so hopefully we can find a role for him where he can create chances for himself and teammates. He will certainly be fun to watch as he is creative and and has the feet to pull off some real magic."

Washington returns to the pitch this fall looking to build on its recent success. The Huskies wrapped up the 2018 season with five-straight shutouts--one shy of the current schedule. Last year, UW reached the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight season and the sixth time in eight seasons under Clark, who is in line to win his 100th match at Washington with the Huskies first victory in 2019.
