Rain Delay NCAA Golf

Day Two of NCAA Championship Suspended Due to Weather

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Sun Devil Women's Golf team will have to wait until tomorrow to start the second round, as play at the NCAA Championship was suspended today due to inclement weather.

Arizona State will now begin their second round tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. MST, with golfers teeing-off every 11 minutes. Saturday's morning wave will resume play at the same time, finishing up their interrupted round. The Sun Devils will start on the first hole and will once again be paired with UCLA and Northwestern. Here is a look at the tee-times for the second round:

The NCAA announced that the stroke play portion of the tournament will be shortened from 72 holes to 54 holes because of the delays.  After the completion of tomorrow's action, all 24 teams and 12 individuals in the tournament will compete again on Monday, with the pairings for that round being determined by their 36-hole score (leaders in the afternoon wave). The stroke play portion of the championship will culminate with the individual medalist being determined following the 54 holes. The field will then be cut to the top eight teams which advance to the match play quarterfinals on Monday.

"With the severe weather threats that we monitored throughout Saturday afternoon, our committee came to the determination that, given the conditions, shortening the tournament to three rounds of stroke play heading into match play was needed to maintain the overall student-athlete experience and the integrity of the championships," said NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee chair Ryan Colton. "We're looking forward to the next two days of stroke play, where we have the opportunity to crown the individual champion, as well as determine the eight teams advancing to match play, which will begin Tuesday morning."

The two morning groups began their round as regularly scheduled, but play was stopped at 12:15 p.m. CT due to thunderstorms in the area, right before the first afternoon group was scheduled to tee-off.

"It is tough to sit and wait five hours in a weather delay like we did today," Coach Missy Farr-Kaye stated.

Despite the circumstances, the Sun Devils have a positive attitude as they prepare an unfamiliar situation. Scenarios like this are the reason Coach Farr-Kaye and her coaching staff focus on the mental aspect of the game.

"No matter what, we will be ready to take on any conditions that come our way," Coach Farr-Kaye remarked.

After today's brief action, Arizona State moved up a spot in the standings and now sits in seventh place. No. 3 Duke and No. 1 USC had strong starts to the day before the weather played a factor. Duke rose up in the standings into first place, going 11-under through their first 16 holes to put them at two-over for the tournament. USC also bumped up thanks to a five-under start through 16, now in second place at nine-over.
