ORLANDO, Fla. --- Washington's season came to an end on Tuesday at the 2019 NCAA Individual Championships as
Stacey Fung dropped her second-round match in the singles tournament and Fung and
Nika Zupancic lost their opening-round contest in the doubles tournament.
Fung, who was making her third-straight trip to the NCAA Individual Championships, suffered a tough loss in a close contest, falling 6-4, 7-5 to VCU's Paola Delgado in the afternoon session. Fung fell behind early, trailing 3-1 and 5-2 in the first set. She would rally to close to within one game by winning the next two to make it 5-4, but was unable to get closer. In the second, Fung took the early advantage, leading 3-1 early on. But Delgado rallied to tie the score at 4-4, then broke a 5-5 tie by winning a pair of tight games to take the match 7-5.
Fung closes out the season with an 18-11 overall record in singles play, recording 91 career singles victories to tie her for fifth on UW's all-time wins list. The 2018 ITA All-American posted a 6-7 record against ranked opponents this season, suffering her first loss to a nationally-ranked opponent in over a month after having won three-straight. The senior becomes just the fifth Husky to reach the NCAA Singles Championship three times, joining Kristina Kraszewski (1998-2000), Dea Sumantri (2003-05), Venise Chan (2008-11) and
Denise Dy (2010-12). In addition, she is the 10th player to participate in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in the same season, joining—among others—her current teammate
Vanessa Wong, who did so last season.
In the late evening, Fung and Zupancic lost a tough match against Georgia's Katarina Jokic and Lourdes Carle, falling 6-4, 6-1 in the first round match. Washington got the drop on the Bulldogs, jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead before Georgia came back to tie it at 3-3. Still knotted at 4-4, the Bulldogs got a break and held on to take the first set 6-4. In the second, Washington saw its serve broken three times as Georgia pulled ou tthe 6-1 win.
Zupancic, a walk-on freshman who earned a scholarship midway through the season, made the most of her first collegiate season, posting a 25-11 record in doubles play. Those 25 wins are tied for the eighth-most in program--just two shot of the most in team history. She went 20-10 with Fung including an 8-3 mark in tournament play with the duo recording an upset victory over the No. 1 ranked team from Arizona State in the Pac-12 Tournament.
