Cougar Run Ends at 2019 NCAA Tennis Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Washington State doubles team of Tiffany Mylonas and Hikaru Sato saw their NCAA tournament come to an end at the hands South Carolina's Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Tennis Doubles Championship Wednesday at the USTA National Campus.

Mylonas and Sato, ranked No. 22 nationally, were facing the No. 4 seeded team after pulling off a tremendous comeback in their first round Tuesday, battling back from a 6-1, 4-1 deficit to win in three sets. Unfortunately for Mylonas and Sato, they could not pull off another one.

With the match tied at 2-2, South Carolina rode back-to-back breaks of serve to a 6-3 first set. In the second, Martins and Horvit jumped out quick, taking a 5-1 lead before the Cougars captured a break of served and cut the lead to 5-3. South Carolina was able to hold serve and close out the match, 6-3, 6-3.

"I am so proud of the progress Tiffany and Hikaru made this season," said WSU Head Coach Lisa Hart. "The way they battle and the way they compete exemplifies the very best of college tennis."

The loss marked the first for the Cougar duo since falling to Arizona State March 29, a span of 11 matches where Mylonas and Sato went 7-1 with three matches unfinished. The stretch included three victories over top 15 opponents and all opponents in the last 11 matches were ranked in the top 50 nationally.

Mylonas and Sato end their season with a program-record 27-7 record and became the first Cougar duo selected to the NCAA tournament in 17 years and the first pair in program history to win a match at the NCAA Doubles Championship
