Cressy-Smith to Play in NCAA Quarterfinal

May 22, 2019 | Men's Tennis

ORLANDO, Fla. – UCLA's second-seeded pair of Maxime Cressy and Keegan Smith advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championships doubles tournament Wednesday, dispatching of Belmont's Marko Ilic and Hendrik Inno 6-2, 6-3 at the USTA National Campus.

The round-of-eight appearance marks the fourth straight year a UCLA tandem has accomplished that feat in the year-end tournament. It also represents the deepest run in the career of Cressy, who is making his NCAA Championships debut. Smith reached the semifinal round in 2018 with Austin Rapp.

Cressy-Smith prevailed in straight sets for the second match in as many days, receiving little challenge en route to its 6-2 first-set victory. The dueling Bruins split the first six games of the second set, but the Los Angeles-based duo seized the final three to sew up the victory. Ilic-Inno was ranked 29th coming into the match, giving Cressy-Smith its ninth top-50 win without a loss.

Next up for Cressy-Smith is an all-Southern California quarterfinal against Joel Gamerov and August Holmgren of San Diego. Gamerov-Holmgren, ranked 50th in the nation, upset 5-8 seed Juan Aguilar and Barnaby Smith of Texas A&M Wednesday in a marathon match. After splitting the first two sets, Gamerov-Holmgren held off its Aggie counterpart with a 14-12 decision in the third. Thursday's match will begin at 4 p.m., PT.
