Andrews-Broomfield to NCAA Semis With Comeback

May 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis

ORLANDO, Fla. – UCLA women's tennis will be represented in the semifinal round of the NCAA Championships doubles tournament, as the third-seeded pair of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield registered a comeback win against 5-8 seed Makenna Jones-Cameron Morra of North Carolina Thursday at the USTA National Campus.

Andrews-Broomfield dropped the first set before overpowering its counterpart in the second to set up a 10-point tiebreaker. The Bruins ultimately took that by a 10-7 score, setting up a semifinal-round matchup against top-seeded Angela Kulikov-Rianna Valdes of crosstown rival USC. That match is scheduled to start no earlier than 5 p.m., PT Friday. Redshirt junior Jada Hart had her season come to an end earlier Thursday, as she fell in the singles tournament to second-seeded Katarina Jokic of Georgia in three sets.

Hart got off to a promising start against Jokic, taking four of the first five games before completing the opening set with a 6-4 result. The Bruin then took three of the first four in the second before Jokic turned things around. The Bulldog closed the frame on a 5-1 run to set up a deciding third set. There, Hart started with a big break of serve and a 2-0 lead. Jokic got the match back on serve and seized the final three games for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win.

Hart, who was eliminated from the doubles tournament with partner Elysia Bolton Wednesday, completed her season with a 19-10 singles record. The redshirt junior went 11-8 against nationally-ranked opponents and closed the season with six wins in her last seven decisions.

The day's final match started with Jones-Morra taking four of the first five games en route to a 6-4 first-set decision. Andrews-Broomfield answered emphatically, taking the first five games of the second set and pulling even thanks to a 6-1 score. In the 10-point tiebreaker, each pair claimed three points before changing sides. The second half of the decisive set was controlled by the Bruins, who increased a 7-6 lead to 9-6 before holding on for 10-7.

Andrews-Broomfield narrowly lost its only match played against Kulikov-Valdes this season, dropping a 6-4 decision as part of the Trojans' March 1 dual-match win.
