05/23/19 | Track and Field

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of Oregon track and field team secured five NCAA Championships spots on day one of the NCAA West Preliminary at Hornet Stadium. The Ducks also advanced 15 athletes to the quarterfinal round which will be run Friday with the exception of the 1,500 meters.

Carmela Cardama Baez – 10,000 meters
Rhesa Foster – long jump

Keira McCarrell – javelin
Weronika Pyzik – 10,000 meters

Moving on to quarterfinals…
Reed Brown – 1,500 meters

Briyahna DesRosiers – 400 meters
Brianna Duncan – 100 meters
Susan Ejore – 800 meters
Orwin Emilien – 400 meters
Cravon Gillespie – 100 meters
Jonathan Harvey – 400m hurdles
Jessica Hull – 1,500 meters
Charlie Hunter – 1,500 meters
Oraine Palmer – 100 meters
Spenser Schmidt – 100 meters
Hannah Waller – 400 meters
James West – 1,500 meters

In the final event on the track, Cardama Baez and Pyzik each finished within the top 12 to clinch their 10K spots in Austin. For the first time in her career, Cardama Baez advances to the NCAA meet. She was fifth in 33:40.96 while Pyzik crossed right behind her in 33:41.35, a season-best effort. This will mark the second NCAA appearance for Pyzik but her first as a Duck. She finished 10th at last year's national meet while at San Francisco.

The drama of the NCAA West Preliminary was on full display with the Ducks' first two qualifiers of the week. In the men's hammer, Lydum qualified out of the second of three flights with a personal best of 64.16m/210-6 on his final attempt. The mark held up through the third flight with Lydum grabbing the final spot on the 12-man qualifying list.

McCarrell had a similar experience, having to wait through flight three of the women's javelin to see if her day's best of 48.16m/158-0 would be enough. When the final attempt of the competition fell short, McCarrell had secured her second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.

For the third time in as many years, Foster advances to the national meet in the long jump. The Pac-12 champion had a day's best of 6.26m/20-6.5 from the third round to secure her spot. She finished fifth overall in the field of 48. Foster was fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships this past March.

Among the Ducks' quarterfinalists, Gillespie and Hull were the top qualifiers in their respective events. Gillespie, the reigning Pac-12 Track Athlete of the Year, stopped the clock in 10.01 to lead a quartet of Oregon sprinters into the next round. He'll be joined in Friday's quarterfinal by Oraine Palmer, Spenser Schmidt and Rieker Daniel.

Hull, the defending NCAA champion at 1,500 meters, pulled away down the final stretch for a time of 4:14.80, good for an automatic qualifier. After a day off, the 1,500-meter field will return to the track Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with eyes on a top-12 result.

In addition to Friday's quarterfinals, the schedule will feature first-round heats of the 200 meters and 100- and 110-meter hurdles. Oregon will have additional day-two NCAA chances in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, women's discus and men's javelin.
